If You Leave

I tossed and turned that night. Marko was asleep peacefully next to me, I hadn't told him what I overheard from my sister. I didn't entirely know how to. How do you tell your boyfriend that your sister has an obsession with him and my abusive ex wants to get back with me and that together they're plotting our break up? Not easily that's how. But I realised that I had to tell him, otherwise who knew what was going to happen? I sat up and ran my hand through my hair before looking over at Marko and I gently shook him and he groaned and turned around. ''You okay?'' He asked as he rubbed his eyes and I sighed. ''I need to tell you something.'' I replied and he sat up and stretched and looked at the clock. ''At 2am?'' I nodded and he shrugged. ''It's my sister, I overheard her talking to Oscar today.'' I said and Marko's eyes instantly filled with anger at hearing Oscar's name. ''They're tryna break us up Marko, I heard it. Ella wants to get with you and Oscar wants me back...'' I paused, waiting for his reaction. He just hugged me. ''Oscar isn't getting anywhere near you ever.'' He said and I just started crying. ''Why? Why is she doing this? It's not fair.'' I said and Marko continued to hold me close.

Me and Marko had just got back from shopping and I decided after I put the groceries away I would do some laundry. I checked all the pockets before putting the clothes in the washing machine, but something was in Marko's dinner jacket. Odd, why was it even in here? We hadn't gone out for dinner for ages and he hadn't been out without me. I pulled it out and there was a reciept for a restaurant called 'Mat & Destillat.' I knew that one, it wasn't too far away and it was pretty fancy. I frowned and looked at it, 1716.68 SEK (£128). That was a lot of money. Marko walked in to get some clean clothes to take up from the dryer. ''Marko, what's this?'' I asked as I held up the receipt. ''What's what?'' He asked, glancing over. ''This receipt. It's from Mat & Destillat. We've never been there.'' I replied and his brows furrowed. ''Let me see.'' He said and he took the receipt from me and examined it. His confusion mirrored my own. ''I have no Idea, I've never been there Ev.'' He said, handing it back to me.

I felt a lump in my throat, and my eyes began to tear up. ''Then how did it end up in your jacket?'' I asked, my voice shaking. ''I don't know Eva, someone must have put it there or something.'' He replied and I shook my head. ''Who would do that Marko? Why would anybody put a fake receipt in your pocket?'' I asked and Marko took a deep breath. ''Maybe it's Ella and Oscar. You told me last night they're trying to mess with us.'' He replied and I felt a tear run down my cheek. ''It's always something with you lately. How am I supposed to trust you when things like this keep happening?'' I asked with frustration. Marko took a step forwards and I took a step back. ''Eva, please darling. You know me. You know I wouldn't ever do anything to hurt you. I'm not Oscar.'' He pleaded. I knew this was probably Ella and Oscar's doing, but there was still that part of me that thought maybe this was true. ''I want to believe you, Marko. But tell me how can I when I'm holding something that points to you going behind my back?'' I asked tearfully and he began to tear up himself.

''Eva, baby, I swear I don't know how it got there. It has to be Ella, you have to believe me!'' He said desperately and I took a step towards the door. I wanted to believe him, but surely Ella wouldn't go and spend so much money when she was unemployed? And Oscar was no better off, none of them could afford this so I had no idea who to believe. I was so overwhelmed and conflicted. ''Marko, I need some time to think.'' I said softly and Marko shook his head. ''Eva, don't do this. Please don't do this, you can't really believe I did this.'' His face and tone were ones of heartbreak. ''I need some space Marko. Please.'' I replied firmly and I began going to the bedroom, passing Marko the receipt when we got to the living room. I sighed and looked at him. ''We'll talk later, I just need to clear my head.'' I said, walking off and I heard him sigh and crinkle the receipt.

''I'll do whatever it takes to fix this Ev, I promise.'' He said to me, just loud enough that I could hear his voice shake.
