SATURDAY. Chris was in the garage, looking over data from the free practice sessions while waiting for Cassie to emerge from her room.
She was taking longer than usual and was supposed to already be out. Chris started to worry. Brina told him about her anxious ways, how she let her thoughts get away from her and only the sound voice of someone else could bring her to her senses.
Walking down the hall that led to hers and Mick's drivers rooms, Chris heard the muffled sound of music playing. He knocks, not hearing a response and opens the door.
The melancholic music floods the halls and Chris's ears. He's found Cassie sitting on the couch, her overalls around her hips, her leg bouncing while she scratched her forearm. Her eyes studied the green of her race boots.
"Cassie." Her head snapped up at his call, a half smile wearily rising up her lips. "What's with the music?"
Her eyes panned over to the speaker. "I can't listen to hype music. I waste all my energy before I get into the car." She looked back at her engineer, noticing his gaze was locked in on where her nails continued to attack her arm. She stopped, not realizing she was doing it in the first place.
"Well we've got to get you ready. Come on." He nodded his head in the general direction of where her car sat idle.
Wordlessly, she turned off her music and followed him out to the bustling garage.
"Your data from practice is similar to Mick's so we expect you'll set a time close to his. We're confident in a Q3 appearance, but that's if we don't get unlucky again." Chris shared, making Cassie sigh as she recalled the events of last time.
Please take my bad luck and give it to someone else.Cassie pleaded with the heavens, communicating with them through her thoughts and hoping they'd hear her.
Chris smacked his hand down onto the table, turning to Cassie with a grin. "You got this. Just do what you know how to do best. Drive." She nodded nervously. Chris noticed.
"Cassie. Everyone here knows you can do it. You've got to believe that too." This time when she nodded, she did it with more confidence.
Clapping a hand to her shoulder, he squeezed it and gave her a shake before walking off, leaving her to dress herself with the necessary equipment.
Lowering herself into her fitted seat, she took a deep breath. Brina drilled it in her head years ago that overthinking would only pull her back. Despite wanting to excel forward, Cassie couldn't block out the intruding thoughts of self doubt no matter how hard she tried. They'd always be there, whispering in her ear and praying on her downfall.
