CLARISSA LUCAS: A talent destined to be? Or a pawn in a pr game?
ASTON MARTIN has been the focus of many headlines lately, and there's no question why. After two time world champion declared his second retirement from the sport, the green team called upon twenty-three year old Clarissa Lucas to fill his spot.
From the jump, fans were skeptical. Lucas had been stuck in formula 2 for four years, narrowly missing out on the championship the second and third years and coming in second both times due to streaks of bad luck.
However, last year during fp1 in both Mexico City and Las Vegas, and pre-season testing, Lucas looked very strong in the car. She set competing lap times on both occasions, taking many fans by surprise.
Fernando Alonso himself seemed to be satisfied with who they chose as his replacement. In Las Vegas reported, "I think she is a fantastic young talent, and should not be overlooked. The team came to me and asked me who I would want to fill my seat, and I told them that I would want her."
"I'd been watching her during the junior formulas. Of course because she was in our junior program, but also because she clearly showed she had what it takes, and I think on track yesterday she really showed that." The champion went on to say.
However, there is another question to ask. Were any of his words genuine?
As stated previously, Aston Martin has been making headlines. Their new driver is astronomically popular with the media. That much was clear in the last few Grand Prix's she attended with the team. Cameras were on her more than they were on the racing.
Even reporters could not get enough of her. Scenes in the paddock largely featured the female being hunted down by journalists.
While bringing in Lucas would be a smart pr move for Aston Martin, Lucas has proved time and time again that she can compete at the expected levels.
With the Bahrain Grand Prix in sight, fans will finally get to see how Lucas performs under the pressure of a race, and determine whether or not she was the right choice for Aston Martin.
