"What the Hades are those!?" Travis hissed.

The damp, narrow tunnel echoed with the distant drip of water. Flickering orange torches lined the rough-hewn walls, casting elongated shadows. Travis adjusted his flying shoes, their leather creaking softly. Rose and Katie stood beside him, their eyes fixed on the threat.

The two green and purple fire creatures flickered and moved graciously. They had stubby arms and legs, also made of fire.

"I've never read anything about creatures made completely of flame before," Rose whispered, "never even heard of them."

"But why are they freaking green and purple?" Katie hissed. "Blue fire I can get, like on the stove, but green and purple??"

"Actually, I can explain that with chemistry," whispered Rose. "In the periodic table, the elements in the first two columns, except hydrogen, are the alkali and alkaline earth metals, which are very reactive. Some of those metals, when set on fire, create colorful fires, which is why they're also used in fireworks."

"I'm not getting it," said Travis.

"For example," Rose continued quietly, "magnesium makes white fire. The bright orange and yellow of most wood flames is due to the presence of calcium and sodium. The blue in wood flames comes from carbon and hydrogen, which emit in the blue and violet. Copper compounds make green or blue and lithium makes red. Oh, and potassium makes light purple flames and barium makes green flames. Pretty neat, right?"

"It's weird that you know all this," said Travis

"It's weird that you know all this," said Travis

"We don't care about chemistry, Rose," Katie snapped. "What we care about is defeating the monsters and the Queen."

"Well, first off if there's a white fire creature, made by burning magnesium, you definitely don't want to use water, because that would make it literally explode-"

"There is no white fire!" Katie hissed. "Does green fire explode to water?"

"If it's a barium flame, yes, definitely. You need a class F grease fire extinguisher specifically designed for grease fires, like an ABUS fire extinguishing spray."

"Do we have that?"

"No."

"Great."

"Guys, there's something inside of the fire creature things," said Travis. He was squinting.

"What?" said Rose.

She squinted to look closer at the green fire monster and indeed, there was something right in the middle of it. It was moving to a certain beat like a heart.
