Connor raised his sword and started running towards the monster with a battle cry, pushed by  anger and fear alike.

He needed to protect Rose.

He needed to protect the girl he loved.

He couldn't lose her, not now that she'd started being so friendly to him.

Seeing it had caused a reaction in its second prey, the Hellhound dropped Rose on the sidewalk. She fell with a pained squeak straight onto her back, bending her neck forward to not risk a head injury. Pumped by adrenaline, she managed to drag herself to the wall of the pizza place with her uninjured hand. Tears were streaming from her eyes, but Connor realized that she was relatively okay: she didn't seem to have any broken bones, but her arm seemed to be steaming a little bit.

Connor got ready to face the Hellhound, sword raised.

The monster's cheeks gurgled... and it spat at him.

Its spit was an unpleasant green that immediately made him think of poison.

Connor yelped and sliced through the jet of spit with his sword, sending the two halves crashing against the street, where it started burning holes into the asphalt.

"AHA!" he shouted, triumphant, but the feeling didn't last.

His sword had melted completely. Only the hilt remained. He hadn't gotten sprayed by the acid or the melted metal, but he was defenseless.

He stared at the monster in horror. He knew he couldn't beat it. If he could just manage to get Rose's sword... no, it was on the other side of the monster. Connor's best bet was turning around and running, and even then, the Hellhound would definitely catch up to him in seconds. And he couldn't just leave Rose.

Ah, shucks, he thought.

He felt pathetic. Rose, Katie and Travis had bested a whole freaking goddess, and he couldn't even defeat a simple hellhound.

The monster's entire attention was on him. He didn't know what to do.

Suddenly, arrows flew from the roofs of the houses on either side of them. At the end of the arrows were long, silver ropes, whose ends Connor couldn't distinguish.

He took a few steps back, still gripping his hilt tightly.

With a loud screeching sound of metal against stone, the slick arrows engraved themselves into the ground on either side of the Hellhound, about a dozen on either side of it..

Two dozen teenage girls jumped down from roofs, holding silver bows that connected to the ropes.

They wore silver jackets and silver pants.

Connor gaped as he recognized them.

The girls in silver slammed their bows down onto the ground, and their collective strength managed to pull the Hellhound down onto the ground, where it roared and howled and growled in fury.

The first girl to the right of Connor left her bow on the ground as the others held it down with the ropes.

She had spiky black hair, electric blue eyes and she wore something that looked like a silver tiara.

Thalia Grace.

"Thalia!" Rose said, smiling painfully in relief.

Thalia didn't reply and looked down at the bull-sized beast.

It growled at her as if to say, Get away from me or you'll regret it!

Thalia was unfazed. She pulled a knife from her belt and struck it into the beast's neck.
