"I honestly never thought I'd ever be walking down an underground tunnel with no windows, after being kidnapped by fire vampires, following a deranged teenager in socks, with my head on fire," Violet whispered to Adora, at the back of the crowd.

"...Me neither," Adora mumbled.

Connor trudged on, at the front of their company, silent as a mouse, miserable.

I have to become more serious, he thought, because of me, the kids were almost... If Jinny hadn't been so strong and brave, who knows what...

He couldn't show it, but he'd been extremely shaken by the consequences of his enthusiastic attitude. He realized he had to change his tactics.

He knew that he wasn't going to radically change everything about himself, and stop pulling pranks for example, but he had to learn when to joke and when to be serious.

He thought of Travis, Katie, and Rose.

I am such an idiot. How could they trust me with such a task?  He frowned and anger started bubbling in the pit of his stomach. Actually, they didn't want me on their wing rescue mission. Because I'd just 'slow them down'. No. No, no, no, Connor. Don't go down the rabbit hole. They were just trying to protect you.

He shook his head. Now was not the moment. All he had to do was get the kids out safely.

He stepped on a particularly pointy stone and hissed in pain. He hated not having shoes.

He twisted his neck to look at Jinny, passed out on his back, arms loosely swaying over his shoulders. Her peaceful, sleeping face was moving dangerously close to that fire hat of his.

Then Connor turned back towards the others.

He did a brief headcount: 6 kids and 1 goddess. Everyone was there.

He turned back around. Loyal stood by him. Connor had given him Rose's camera (he could barely trust himself with anything anymore) after explaining to him how to use it whenever they reached an intersection.

"Okay, are we going to talk about what Jinny did back there?" Andrés whispered anxiously.

"It was insane," Raven agreed. "She was so awesome."

"It will probably be the weirdest thing that'll ever happen to me," Adora mumbled.

"Um... I wouldn't bet on that, I have a bad feeling..." Violet said quietly.

"Better not jinx it," Nino agreed.

He walked up towards Connor, who was carrying Jinny. "Is she okay?" he asked him worriedly.

"Yes, she's okay," Connor said calmly.

"Are you sure I'll be okay without a fire hat?" Raven said nervously.

"Yeah, you'll be fine," Connor said calmly.

"Do we have any water?" Andrés asked.

"I'm hungry!" Loyal complained.

"We'll get food and water when we get out," Connor said calmly.

"When will we get out?" Adora asked.

"Are we there yet?" Violet asked.

"Guys!" Connor stopped in his track.

They all copied him and took a step back, surprised by the sudden loud sound.

He was nearly at the end of his fuse. It took all his strength to keep himself from sinking to his knees and crying. Crying about his solo mission, the guilt, the pressure, and even his shoeless feet. He wanted Rose to hug and tell him he'd be alright, that he'd make up for his stupidity.
