They walked down the path for what felt like hours, but was just 10 minutes, in an empty, dry silence that made Rose think of the realm of Hades. The only sound was the sound of their footsteps on the gravel.
Hundreds of messy thoughts rushed through Rose's mind. She wondered about the prator, about Lily, about Jason, about her possible father.
She'd get to the end of it. She had to.She also kept repeating the verse of the prophecy.
Two daughters of the goddess of grain,
Shall free the Rainbow from her chain,
As two sons of the wing-footed god,
Protect them with their own true blood.Sounds super exciting, doesn't it?
She didn't want anything to happen to the boys, but you can never fight against the prophecies. Every single ancient Greek story said that.
The only thing they could do was embrace it and hope for the best.Iris was the goddess of Rainbows and rainbows stand for hope.
Was a little hope too much to ask?
She kept her eyes riveted on the screen of her camera and kept switching from normal screen, to see the rainbow path, to X-ray and to infrared.
Suddenly she halted in her step and Katie ran into her.
"Ow! Why'd you st—"
"Shush!" Rose hissed. She grabbed Katie's arm and pushed her into a cavity in the wall. Travis and Connor quickly squeezed in beside them.
"What are you—" Katie started.
"Sh!" Rose hissed, covering Katie's mouth with her hand.
Half a minute before, she'd seen the cavity in the wall with her X-ray camera and found it strange. But when she switched to infrared, she saw two very red (and hence very warm) figures approaching.
The cavity was about 1.5 meter (5 feet) long and a meter (3 feet) wide. The entrance was very well concealed in the smooth walls. Rose wouldn't have seen it without her X-ray camera.
With her free hand, Rose looked at the X-ray camera screen and saw two skeletons walking toward them on the other side of the wall.
The two skeletons appeared to be getting closer and the four demigods could hear them speaking. As they got closer, their words started making sense.
"—okay, and what does she want for dessert again?" said the first.
"She wanted a mix of fruit blood with some sweetener," said the second.
"Well that's lucky," said the first, "we've recently caught a Demeter kid and an Aphrodite one. She said she wanted it fresh or fermented?"
Katie let out a soft, horrified gasp and Rose augmented the pressure her hand had against her mouth.
"Fresh, we'll ask the cooks to harvest the blood," said the second.
They were now close enough so that Rose could see their complete skeletons:
From the bottom of the hip bone and up, they seemed to be two normal women.
One leg was completely visible on the X-ray (fun fact: all metal appears as a solid block on an X-ray machine and that's why a patient is always requested to remove all metal objects because it interferes with the imaging and makes it hard to see) and the other was a equine kind of bone. It had to be a donkey leg. What else could it be?"Her Fireness' party is going to be amazing!" said the first. "She was so cool when she single-handedly captured that seven-color goddess!"
"Ugh, I didn't get to see her do that, I was on guard duty," said the second.
