In the morning, I went downstairs to greet the chiefs. Marigold and Ash were already downstairs and they had chainmail armor on and swords sheathed. Marigold had a bow and quiver instead. Andromeda waved her hand and I suddenly had chainmail armor and a sword too. "Today you will start with placement tests to see how you use your abilities already. This will be a bracket based tournament. Your matchups will be displayed on the board." Andromeda waved her hand towards the board. "You will be against the apprentices of the other elemental chiefs."
I was determined to win the tournament. Three other children our age came to join us. I looked at the board and the first matchup was me against a boy named Onyx. I automatically teleported to the battlefield. Onyx had dark purple chainmail armor on and he was holding to scythes. He had a scowl on his face and black hair covered his eyebrows. A horn sounded, and signaled us to start. Onyx immediately lunged at me, scythes unsheathed, but I leapt out of the way. I then unsheathed my sword as well and gripped my shield. We then started dueling like pirates fighting for a ship. Onyx then landed a hard blow on me. I fell back. I turned to face Onyx, but to my surprise, his swords were enveloped in a dark purple mist, and the same mist was pouring out of his eyes. He swung his scythes at me and a pair of claws shot out of them. It grabbed me and started squeezing me the exact same way the phoenix-dragon prince did with Ash. I winced, remembering that Ash had someone to save her. Only this time, I didn't. I tried to break free, but Onyx let out a harsh laugh and the claws started to squeeze me harder, as if he was reading my mind. "Nothing can beat darkness, Everett. Just surrender now so you don't get embarrassed." I turned my head to look at Onyx in the eyes. "That's where you are wrong, Onyx." Onyx put on a confused face. I smiled. "Light will never surrender. We will fight 'till the end." I said firmly. I closed my eyes, searching for the flame inside of me. I then found it. My body then enveloped in flames. Onyx let out a sheer shriek and dropped me. I opened my eyes, and to my surprise, I had shifted to my phoenix form. There were gasps and murmurs coming from the onlookers. Onyx squinted his eyes, and turned into a giant raven. The battle was now beast versus beast. I flew high into the sky with my majestic wings, and blew a barrage of fireballs at Onyx below. He attempted to dodge them as he was flying toward me, but one hit one of his wings and he crashed back down to the ground. He then turned back into human form, but he retained his wings, then I landed and did the same. "Let's end this." I said. We both jumped into the air, slashing our swords simultaneously and opening our wings to slow our descent. We both landed. Onyx collapsed, and I claimed the victor. Andromeda then teleported between Onyx and turned to me. She summoned healers to come and take Onyx. "You have done well, Everett Anderson. You may watch the next battle on the balcony."
"What is the next matchup?" I asked her.
"Ashley Stone and Aspen Hart." She replied.
I wonder what element he uses. He probably uses water, I thought.
I then went up to the balcony to watch Ash and Aspen duke it out.
The horn then sounded, and then Ash lunged at Aspen. I was shocked to find that Aspen didn't even carry a weapon, just a wooden staff. Aspen just flicked his staff, then a vine with poisonous thorns shot up out of the ground and wrapped itself around Ash. It then threw her across the battlefield.
Ash immediately got up, unfazed by the many scratches on her face and hands. She responded to the attack by getting close enough to Aspen and using her power, freezing anything within a ten yard radius. She managed to catch Aspen in the attack, and she swung her sword at Aspen, who was still frozen in the ice. When Ash's sword collided with the ice block Aspen was in, the ice shattered and Aspen was thrown to the ground, teeth chattering. He had a massive wound down his torso where Ash got him and it was bleeding furiously. But Aspen smiled. He had a trick up his sleeves. He thrust his fingers into the lush ground and healed immediately. Ash widened her eyes and thought of a plan. She then pounded the ground with her fists, and turned the battlefield into an icy wasteland. Aspen was now at a major disadvantage. Ash smiled, and summoned ice spikes from the ground. Aspen tried to dodge, but he was too slow. An ice spike thrusted into his torso and he hung limp from the ice spike. Wow, I thought. Ash beat him in less than five minutes! Ash and Aspen then teleported to the balcony. Andromeda healed Aspen with a flick of her hand. "Nice job, Ash! You really killed it out there." I then cringed, thinking about how Onyx almost suffocated me. "Not literally, of course."
Ash walked over. "Yeah!" She chuckled.
The next match-up was between Brooke, who had water powers, and Marigold. It was a gruesome fight, but they both dropped unconscious to the ground at the same time, so they both moved on to the semi-finals.
On the board, Aspen and Onyx's names were crossed out so only Marigold, Ash, Brooke, and I remained.
" Go to your rooms, and rest up for the semi-finals tomorrow." Andromeda told the four of us. We were all tired, so we did as she asked.
