Clash of Opposites

I woke up the next day feeling dread in the pit of my stomach. I had to fight the person that is very close to me, someone who I love most. I unwillingly got out of bed and took a quick bath and changed into my clothes, chainmail armor, and strapped my sword to my belt. I then went downstairs.

Ash was waiting with Spyro, Winter, and Andromeda, along with three more chiefs whom I didn't know. "Everett, meet Sage, Marina, and Azalea." Winter said, "They are the elemental chiefs and chieftains of darkness, water, and earth." He pointed to each chief in turn. "They will oversee your battle, as well as the rest of us." Sage had been watching me the entire time.

Sage stepped towards me. "But first, we have to alter your memories so you don't hold back when you fight."

I bristed with anger. "Isn't that an invasion of privacy?" I quipped, my fingertips crackling with embers.

"Theoretically, we are taking away memories, not changing them." Sage answered confidently, giving me a cold stare. "We'll give them back after." I glanced at Ash, who had frost emitting from her hands, sharing the same anger as I was. I stepped back and lit Sage's sleeves on fire. He widened his eyes, but Marina quickly put it out. "You want a fight, Everett?" Sage made a fist and engulfed it in darkness. "A fight is what you will get." He lunged at me, but Andromeda bound his wrists and ankles with pure light. "We are supposed to observe the battle, not hurt them!" She said angrily. Sage attempted to break into my mind, making my head sear with pain. I held my head, squeezing my eyes shut. Andromeda sensed what he was doing. "Do not hurt them mentally either." she ceased Sage's spell. My head stopped hurting, so I stood up straight.

Andromeda sighed. "I'll wipe their minds myself." She waved her hands around and flicked them in our faces. We looked at each other before we would forget. All memories of Ash then left my mind.

I looked at the person standing next to me. "What's your name? Mine's Everett."

"I'm Ashley, but just call me Ash. You're my opponent, correct?"

I nodded. Andromeda teleported us to the battlefield. The horn then sounded. I started by summoning my wings and taking to the sky. Ash did the same. She was tailing me, so I shot a fireball right at her face. It hit her with great force and she tumbled down to the ground. She then shot a cloud of ice spikes at me. I attempted to shoot back with fire spears, and it clashed, making a brutal explosion, knocking us both down. Then, we got back up like nothing happened and started to clash. I used my flames while Ash used her ice beam. The two powers collided, creating a supernova of power. We were both thrown to the ground, dazed by the burst of power. I then thrust my hands into the barren earth and surged some of my power into it. A column of fire then surrounded Ash and I. The battlefield was cut in half. "Trying to get the upper hand I see?" Ash interpreted. "Well, I got a plan too." She stomped her foot and the ground turned into ice. My column of fire turned blue. "Now your fire won't hurt me." Ash said. She thrust her hand in the blue flame, just so she could make a point. Her arm came out unscathed. I narrowed my eyes and scanned the battlefield to see if I saw something that could help me get the upper hand. If I couldn't get to her with my elemental powers, then I might as well use close-quarters to combat her. I whipped out Phoenix and lunged at her. She dodged, but I anticipated that and I swung at the blue fire instead. "You missed." Ash said with a smirk. "I meant to." I said. I took my sword out of the fire and swung at her. It left a deep cut in her arm. She yelped, clutching her bleeding arm and stumbling back in pain. Ash then transformed into an ice dragon, one of her front legs still bleeding. I turned into a phoenix, and flew after her. She saw me coming, and she swung her tail at me, ice spikes enlarged. I didn't have enough time to stop. Her heavy tail smashed into me. I was sent barreling to the ground. I was back to my human form, bleeding profusely. I closed my eyes, trying to block out the pain. I started charging up an attack, but Ash was completely clueless. She shifted to her human-dragon form. "I guess I'm about to win, eh?" She slowly walked towards me. My attack wasn't charged up yet. I need to buy some time, I thought. I laughed hastily "Yeah, I guess. I want to say something before you win." Ash stopped in her tracks and narrowed her eyes "And what is that?"

I stood up, clutching my bleeding torso with my left hand. I grinned. "Eat dust." I flicked my hand at Ash and a cyclone of flames was launched at her. She widened her eyes and tried to fly away, but the cyclone caught her in its storm. She was burned within the cyclone. The attack ceased and the cyclone spit her out. She lay on the ground, breathing raggedly. "I guess you won, Everett." All our memories then rushed back to us. I sobbed. "I don't like seeing you like this." Ash closed her eyes. "It wasn't your fault. Our memories were taken away. You weren't yourself." Saying a few sentences was like running a mile in her current state.

"I know, but you must be in a lot of pain." Ash let out a strained laugh. "Well, you won, didn't you? You should be happy."

"I can't be happy if my best friend is hurt." I said truthfully.

"I think we are more than friends. You and I both know that." she said

I pondered about what she said for a moment.

"You're kinda right I guess." I looked into Ash's eyes. I finally get why I had always wanted to keep her from getting hurt. Why I felt so empty seeing her lying there injured and knowing it was my fault. I was in love with Ashley Stone. I slowly extended my hand to Ash. She took it and as I helped her up, I gazed into her eyes and I knew it was always meant to be. As I leaned in I knew I was making the right choice there was no spark of doubt at all, but I also knew there was no going back as it happened. One thought crossed my mind: I was going to kiss Ashley Stone. I leaned in closer and then, our lips touched gracefully. Neither of us pulled away. All we wanted was to stay in this moment forever.
