Y/n pov:I jolted awake. I coughed and spluttered before gasping for air. Where was I? I examined my surroundings. I was in a cold, dark cage, slowly rising. Every now and again red lights passed by.
I sat up, leaning on my arms as I crawled around the contraption. There were boxes and crates. Animals in cages, rustling about.
I was completely alone.I looked up to see a wall of some sort. It had doors that looked as though they could open but remained shut. I finally realised that the cage was heading straight for the wall. As the cage grew nearer it didn't slow or stop. I was going to crash into it. That this was it. That was going to be my end. Alone, in the dark, confused.
Suddenly a light flashed green and the doors attached to the wall, opened. My eyes were blinded by the light of wherever I had entered. It was mid day and the sun was brighter than ever. Something jumped down into the cage. I heard the thump and then a voice. "It's a girl." He said. The voice seemed to be a rather deep American one. I slowly looked up to see a tall figure standing over me. He was a boy with dark blonde, sort of brown hair. I felt him grab my arm and ask " What do we do?". My fear got the best of me as I, almost as if it was instinct, grabbed what seemed to be a dagger from his belt and held it out at him, tucking my knees to my chest.
I heard the boy laugh as he smiled and said "You should not have gone there greenie".
I pressed the dagger into his leg piercing the skin on his shin, before my vision went blurry and I blacked out. When I awoke, I was lying on an uncomfortable wooden bed. I attempted to sit up but winced at the pain coming from the back of my head. I was too weak to support myself. What happened?
I could hear a voice growing closer before entering whatever room I was in.The boy realised I was awake and shouted, "Oi! Alby, the girl's waking up!". His voice was a low but soft British one. It soothed me almost instantly sending butterflies through my stomach.
He leaned over me, gently speaking."Hey there greenie. My name is Newt. Do you remember yours?".
I stared slipping into what was almost a trance, gazing into his soft brown eyes. They twinkled with small specs of almost gold round the edges. His hair fell gently over his forehead. It was a dirty blonde colour and fluffed up at the ends.
"Greenie?" He inquired, breaking me from my trance before I started processing what was going on. I shook my head at him. I don't remember anything.
"That's ok" he said softly. "Most of us don't get it back immediately.". I looked up at him and muttered "Where am I?"
He returned his gaze to mine before replying. "You are in the glade".
I tilted my head at him as if to silently ask what he meant by that, but quickly stopped at the pain I felt in my head.
"Oh of course" he said looking over to the back of my head. "How could I forget?" He mumbled to himself.
"Forget what?" I asked. I could tell he knew what the pain was and I wanted to know.
"When you cut Gally, he hit you in the head with one of the shovels."
My eyes widened.
"I know" he said almost sympathetically. "Gally has always been one for revenge".
Another boy, dark skinned, taller than 'Newt' as he called himself, walked in.
"I'll let Alby here explain everything to you" Newt said before exiting behind a curtain.
Alby glanced down at me and introduced himself. "Alby, leader of the glade" he said shaking my hand.
I tried once more to sit up, this time finally succeeding. "Let me explain what is going on" he said before beginning to speak.Newt's pov:
I left the medjack's hut and wandered back over to the map room. Inside I found Minho mapping out where he had run today.
"Hey Minho" I blurted before realising how deep he was in thought. Minho often did this. It was best to just leave him be when this happened, he would always snap out of it within an hour or two.
I crept out the room, hoping I hadn't disturbed him too much. I walked out of the dead heads and over to the gardens. There Zart stood tending to the plants.
"Hey there Newt. Has the she-bean woken up yet?" He inquired.
"Yeah. Alby is explaining everything to her now." I responded before grabbing a shovel and the empty bucket on the ground.
"Need anymore fertiliser?" I asked Zart.
"Absolutely! Thanks Newt" he shouted as I walked back into the dead heads and started shovelling.Y/n Pov:
Alby explained everything about the glade. He showed me the buildings, introduced me to the Gladers and taught me the rules. It was when we started meeting everyone that I realised I was the only girl here. I was trapped with 30 boys and no girls and no way out.I walked over to the forest-like patch which was apparently referred to as the dead heads, And climbed up the gentle hill.
I wandered through before reaching a beautiful, old tree. I pulled myself up onto the lowest branch before making my way to the top. I had to stop mid way as my head started throbbing, but continues as the pain lessened. I sat 40 odd metres above the ground, surveying the glade. I couldn't shake this feeling of confusion and fear. This feeling of longing and emptiness inside of me. I hated it. I hated the glade so much. But I was stuck here with no way out.Author note -
