The girls sharp blue eyes flitted to mine for a second, and my heart sank, not even seeing an ounce of regret in them. I didn't want to believe this was happening. I couldn't. How could everything be going so wrong so fast? It was meant to be over. Teresa looked away, her eyes landing on Thomas, as I tried wiping away a stray tear off my cheek - not wanting anyone to see me break.
"What the hell?"
"Teresa?"
"What's going on?" I closed my eyes, trying to focus on the british accented voice to stop myself from spiraling again. I felt like a child complaining about a broken toy or something, but it wasn't fair. It just wasn't fair this kept happening. How much longer would the world keep pushing me? How much longer till I couldn't take it anymore?
"She's with them." Thomas's words cut through me like a knife.
"Since when?" Newt asked from beside me, hurt evident in his voice. I wished I could comfort the others in that moment, but I wasn't sure I could even held myself together - let alone the rest around me.
Janson walked up beside Teresa and Ava, a smirk still planted on his face and I shivered - I wasn't if it was with anger, sadness, or I was just cold. "Teresa, here, has always had an evolved appreciation of the greater good. Once we restored her memories, it was only a matter of time." His eyes turned to me. "Sephora, dear... you were the same. You're smart - come back home."
"Yes, Janson, I'm smart. Which is why I know I'd never touch you people with even a ten foot pole. And I don't have a home - you people made sure of that." My voice sounded strangely calm - as if I didn't have any emotion felt in my body to feel. "Oh, and, don't ever call me dear again." The man's face fell - his facade of a smile dropping as he lurched in my direction, but Thomas and Newt both pulled me back before he could touch me.
Teresa watched the whole thing play out, no readable emotion on her face. "I'm sorry." she started, not looking sorry at all. "I had no choice. This is the only way. We have to find a cure." The sad thing was I could see she truly believed every word she was saying. What had these people done to her for Teresa to really trust in such lies?
"She's right. This is all just a means to an end - you used to understand that Thomas." Ava started, "No matter what you think of me, I'm a doctor, not a monster. I swore an oath to find a cure... no matter the cost." she stated. " I just need more time, more blood." Her eyes moved to someone behind us, and turning around I saw the woman who had injected Brenda and I standing there. "Hello, Mary. I hoped we'd meet again. I'm sorry it had to be under these circumstances."
The woman, Mary, looked nothing but angry to see Ava. "I'm sorry about a lot of things as well." She spat. "But not this. At least my conscience is clear." In that moment, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Janson lift up his gun - and in a second it became painfully clear what was going to happen.
"MARY MOVE!" I heard my own voice scream, as I dived towards the woman, but it was too late - a gunshot rang out across the land, and I froze, my body landing over hers as I tackled the doctor to the ground. I scrambled off her, trying to focus through all the exclamations around me and see how badly she'd been hurt.
"It's just my shoulder, I'm okay." The woman assured me through gritted teeth - obviously in excruciating amounts of pain nonetheless. Once Vince had made sure the woman was alive - he tried throwing himself at the man who'd just tried shooting her. After a few seconds, he gave up - pulling Mary off the ground and into his arms, making sure she really was alright.
