My eyes slowly opened, and I turned to see that the clock read 3 am. I turned my head to see that there was an empty space beside me. Matt was not there, which caused me to get up and dressed before searching for him.

I could here him talking in the kitchen, so I was assuming that he was on the phone. Matt seemed secretive though, which confused me. What could he be hiding? Of course I couldn't stop myself and eavesdropped on what he was saying.

"Zoe doesn't know, I'll tell her when the time is right."

Tell me what?

"What do you mean tell her now?"

Now I want to know now.

"My birthday is coming up, I want her to enjoy it. I want her to be happy."

He cares about me, but what is he hiding.

"Sammy, please. I don't want to discuss this"

So Sammy knows too?

I took a deep breath before walking over to Matt. Matt looked back at me with wide eyes. His face turned pale and he hung up the phone too quickly.

"Matt, what's going on?" I furrowed my eyebrows at him.

"Shit, Zoe. I can't tell you right now." Matt scratched the back of his neck and chewed on his lip.

"Matt, I want the truth. Now." I crossed my arms over my chest, slightly scared to find out what he was going to say.

"My birthday is Tuesday and we leave on Sunday from Barcelona. So as a surprise, I wanted to spend my birthday with you and my parents got me tickets for us to go to Australia directly from Barcelona. I was going to surprise you and Sammy was telling me to tell you now." Matt blurted out and looked down.

What he had told me was pretty convincing. Something was off about this, and I knew he was still hiding something. His birthday was coming up and I decided go drop it. I could do some investigating on my own.

"Zoe? Did you hear anything I just said?" Matt waved his hand in front of my face.

"Wait so you and I are going to Australia?" I exclaimed, feeling a mixture of excitement and embarrassment since I had ruined his surprise.

"Just you and I for another week." Matt wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close.

"I'm sorry for ruing the surprise but if it makes you feel better, I have one for you at home." I placed my hand on his chest as he swayed us back and forth.

"I don't need anything for my birthday, but to be with you." Matt kissed my forehead, then led us back to bed.

Matt and I walked out hand in hand, taking in the warm air of Sydney, Australia. Australia was absolutely my favorite and I knew Matt remembered that I really wanted to go here. Even though it was his birthday, he was treating it like it was mine.

We got a cab and were driven to a small vacation. I honestly had no idea how this trip was being paid for. First Barcelona and then Australia, not to mention renting a house costed extra. I was broke and could barely afford a bag of Cheetos. Of course not literally, but you get the picture.
