The dim light of the corridors lent the scene a sombre mood, while the muffled murmur of doctors and nurses filled the room.
Beomgyu and Yeonjun were surrounded by bustling activity, people rushing to and fro, doctors hurrying through the corridors and the soft hum of medical equipment emanating from the surrounding rooms. The smell of disinfectant was heavy in the air and mingled with the faint scent of flowers placed in vases along the corridors.
Yeonjun sat with his arms crossed, his face tense with worry. Next to him, Beomgyu looked nervous, his hands fiddling with his T-shirt as he fidgeted restlessly with his feet.
The minutes passed slowly and the tension in the air was palpable. Both men were waiting to finally find out how Soyeon was doing, and every second that passed felt like an eternity.
Finally, after a long time, the door opened a crack. "You can come in now," they heard a nurse say.
They both immediately jumped to their feet, but Yeonjun hesitated, holding Beomgyu back by the hand. Through the crack in the door, he met the gaze of Soyeon, who was sitting in her hospital bed, cross-legged and leaning slightly forward as she scooped up a small bowl of pudding. The movement of the lower parts of the blanket suggested that she was wiggling her toes. Soyeon tilted her head, glancing curiously outside at the two boys.
"I'll wait out here," Yeonjun told the actor and then let go of his hand. "I have to wait for my findings myself."
Understanding, Beomgyu nodded, gently stroked the musician's upper arm and then turned towards the sickroom. His steps into the room were cautious and hesitant. He looked at Soyeon, her long blonde hair and the thin fingers holding the bowl. The circles under her eyes also revealed how she must have fared and Beomgyu could hardly imagine how terrible the last four years must have been.
The pressure that built up behind his eyes was almost unbearable and he came to a halt a meter away from the bed. "Soyeon," came from his lips and her eyes were immediately on his face.
"Beomgyu!" she squealed happily, spooning up the last of the pudding before carelessly putting it to one side and hurriedly licking her fingers clean before stretching out her arms. The smile she gave Beomgyu was as wide and bright as the sun itself.
A stone fell from Beomgyu's heart. The worry he had been feeling left him abruptly. He had been afraid it would be strange between them after all this time. He himself had also experienced a lot over the years and especially in the last month. But it felt as if they had only met yesterday. He walked up to her, wrapped his arms around her tightly and buried his face in her long hair. "I'm so glad you're okay."
Full of joy, the girl hugged Beomgyu and enjoyed the familiar warmth of her best friend. Even though her appearance had changed somewhat, as could be seen from her very long hair and the dark roots that had grown back. "I missed you so much," Soyeon sniffled softly, "I didn't think anyone would find me."
