"I just can't believe it!" Namjoo grumbled in the driver's seat and floored the gas pedal. She was upset and more than angry at this revelation, not even managing to focus on Beomgyu and his shock. Instead, she tapped on her dashboard display, where some sort of tablet was attached, to call Hui directly. "We have a big problem," Namjoo said when he answered the call. Her voice quivered with anger and frustration, and she could barely hold back the tears that were gathering in her eyes. Soyeon had been her friend, too, but hearing those tall tales, and only because she had become blind and disturbed with love, made the four years in mourning flare to the highest flame.
"What happened?" Hui asked worriedly when he heard the seriousness in her voice.
"It's a long story," Namjoo began as she tried to keep her emotions under control. "But we urgently need to meet. An emergency meeting. At your place. Now."
Hui was silent for a moment, obviously surprised by Namjoo's sudden request. It seemed extremely serious, which was why he didn't insist on answers. "Understood. I'll be home in ten minutes. I'll call Jisung right away."
"Thank you," Namjoo said, relieved, before hanging up.
Beomgyu sat silently in the passenger seat, completely beside himself and unable to process the words and emotions that had just overwhelmed him. His gaze was blank as he stared through the window without really seeing anything. The world around him seemed blurry and unreal, and he felt like he was trapped in a nightmare. Soyeon's words were still echoing in his ears and he could barely grasp the significance of her revelations. Everything he had believed about her relationship with her had been a lie, and it hit him with an unrelenting harshness. He had longed so much to make a real connection with her, and now he realized that connection had never existed.
He was too caught up in his thoughts to really register what was happening around him.
All he knew was that his whole life seemed to be falling apart and he had no idea how to put the pieces back together.
When Namjoo parked in the driveway of Hui's apartment, it took Beomgyu a while to get out of the car. So the make-up artist carefully took him by the hand and pulled him in the direction of the building. He followed Namjoo mechanically, his gaze still blank and his mind overwhelmed by a storm of thoughts and feelings. He felt his heart heavy in his chest and his breathing shallow, as if he was being crushed under an invisible weight. When they opened the front door, they were greeted by Hui and Jisung, who were already waiting for them. The tension in the air was palpable, and Beomgyu could feel the worried looks on his friends' faces when they saw him.
Hui stepped closer and placed a reassuring hand on Beomgyu's shoulder. He said something, or at least his lips moved. Jisung also stepped closer and put his hand on Beomgyu's back, while at the same time talking to Namjoo, who explained the situation to them.
The words of his friends were hard to get through to Beomgyu. Like a muffled murmur.
"I still can't believe it," he finally heard Namjoo curse as he slowly returned to reality. He swallowed hard and looked back and forth between his friends. The words came to him slowly, as if he was diving through thick fog to get back to the surface. A feeling of emptiness and confusion enveloped him as he tried to grasp the meaning of what Namjoo had said. "All these years we've been looking for her in vain. She played everything until Beomgyu found her."
