Outside, Berk was a whirlwind of chaos. Dragons roared and clawed through the village, turning order into havoc. Nadders swooped low, their razor-sharp beaks ripping into startled sheep, sending the flock into a terrified frenzy. Gronckles, bulky and unyielding, barreled through the fish stalls, their jagged scales flashing as they snatched entire racks with brute force. A Zippleback's twin heads hissed in eerie unison, one igniting a house while the other sent a fireball hurtling, exploding the wooden walls into a shower of blazing debris.

From his vantage point, Hiccup's mind raced with fantasies. A Nadder's head—that'd get me noticed, at least. He imagined the thrill of holding it aloft, the admiring eyes of the village on him. Gronckles? Tough, slow, but a real challenge. Taking one down might just earn me a date. His gaze flicked to the fiery Zippleback. Two heads, twice the danger, twice the glory.

Suddenly, a shout pierced the tumult. "They found the sheep!" a Viking yelled, pointing to the farthest fields where Stoick and Ludic stood tall and unyielding.

Stoick's voice cut like steel through the chaos. "Concentrate fire over the lower bank! Don't let them near the livestock!"

Hiccup's breath caught as his thoughts sharpened. And then there's the Monstrous Nightmare—only the bravest dare face those. They're wild, dangerous, and they set themselves on fire like living torches. Ludic's the only one I know who's killed one... besides Chief, of course. He's the strongest fighter we've got.

Then it happened. A guttural roar split the air as a Monstrous Nightmare burst into flames, a towering inferno of smoke and fire. The dragon lunged onto a nearby catapult, its fiery wings beating the air, scorching everything around it. The heat radiated in waves, blistering the earth beneath its claws.

Ludic's eyes narrowed, jaw set as he took a step back, respecting the beast's raw power. "Reload! I'll take care of this!" Stoick barked, his voice unshakable.

Without missing a beat, Ludic sprang into action. He moved with the precision of a seasoned warrior, coordinating with the other Vikings to reload the catapult. Stoick charged forward, his massive frame a blur of strength and determination. Each blow he landed sent sparks flying, forcing the blazing nightmare to reel and retreat, leaving behind a trail of destruction—and the faint, smoky scent of victory.

The village trembled beneath the onslaught, but the courage and skill of its defenders shone brighter than any dragon's fire. And amid the chaos, young Hiccup watched—yearning, dreaming, waiting for the moment he could prove himself worthy of fighting alongside them.

"But the ultimate prize is the dragon no one has ever seen. We call it the—" Hiccup's thoughts were cut short by a piercing whistle that sliced through the roar of battle, a chilling note that froze every Viking in place. The villagers below erupted into panic.

"NIGHT FURY! GET DOWN!" someone screamed.

Without hesitation, Ludic dropped to the ground, curling protectively, his hands shielding his neck and head—the drill drilled into him from endless training sessions. Then came the thunderous explosion. The air shook as the catapult was engulfed in a violent, fiery blast, shards of wood and metal raining down like deadly hail.

"JUMP!" Stoick's voice roared over the chaos.

Ludic sprang up instinctively, flinging himself sideways just in time to avoid the crashing wreckage. He rolled across the dirt, grit and sweat mixing as he shot to his feet, eyes blazing with fierce resolve, ready to meet whatever fury came next.

Hiccup's heart pounded in his chest. This dragon never steals food, never shows itself, and—most terrifying of all—never misses. No one's ever killed a Night Fury. That's why I'm going to be the first.
