"How....how pregnant were you?" Michael asked in shock, his eyes tearing up at the revelation, "Why didn't you tell me, Athena?"
Athena shrugged, rolling her neck, "It was only three weeks," she shrugged again, "You never know if it'll stick that early."
"Athena, you should have told me," he said softly, his voice filled with affection, "I would have been there for you through everything. We can handle anything as long as we face it together," he added, trying to get her to understand that they had to communicate better, "And what about the baby? What happened to it?" he asked, his eyes searching hers for answers.
"Um.....let's just say, Liam was very....violent," Athena answered as best she could without sounding too blunt, "And nature took its course."
"We.....we were gonna have a baby?" Michael said in bewilderment, "Oh my God!"
Athena bit her lip, taking his reaction as a bad one, "I'm sorry my body couldn't handle it," she muttered, trying to swallow the lump in her throat, "I know you've always wanted a family. I messed up."
"Athena, I would have never forced you into having a baby," Michael said, cupping her face gently, "And knowing you had a miscarriage is heart-wrenching, but it's not your fault. You didn't have control over that. We will try again, okay? I promise."
"I started taking my old birth control again," Athena added, "It's probably expired, but I haven't gotten sick yet, so I assume it's fine."
"Birth control?" Michael raised an eyebrow, "Are we....ready for that conversation again?" he asked, slightly taken aback by Athena's sudden decision.
Athena nodded, "Yeah, I mean...after what happened, I just couldn't take the risk. I'm not ready for that again," she said, "Maybe I should get a hysterectomy....."
Michael raised an eyebrow again, "Athena, a hysterectomy is a major surgery. Let's not make any rash decisions," he said, his voice gentle yet firm as he gazed at her with concern, "You're still healing from everything that happened. One step at a time, okay?"
"But think about it; if I get one, I wouldn't wave to worry about miscarriages ever again," Athena reiterated.
Michael took a moment to let her words sink in, his heart aching at the pain and trauma Athena had endured. He knew she was speaking from a place of fear and vulnerability, wanting to protect herself from any more suffering, "Athena, I understand why you're considering this, but let's not rush into such a big decision," he said gently, pulling her into a comforting embrace,
"Fine then," Athena huffed, "You get a vasectomy, then," she said.
"Vasectomy?" Michael repeated, raising an eyebrow at the unexpected suggestion, "Aren't those supposed to be permanent?"
Athena shrugged, still clinging to the feeling of safety Michael's embrace provided. "Yeah, they are. But so is a hysterectomy, right? It's just as permanent as that surgery," she argued.
