Transfer – Part 2

Maya was left standing at the table in the beanery while the rest of the team walked out. She looked down at the sheet and couldn't believe that her best friend wanted out of the station she literally grew up in.

Maya walked down to the barn and to where the Aid Car is, and found Andy there "Andy, can we talk about this?" Maya said, holding up the form up.

Andy looked up at her "Look, Maya, to be honest, this doesn't have to do with you being captain, it's just everything about this station. Ryan and I would come when we were kids, he was here as an adult, and then there's my dad." Andy looked Maya in the eyes "Maya, You're a good captain. And you'll get even better as time goes on. I'm really sorry for giving you a hard time earlier."

"But you still want to transfer? because -"

Andy interrupts "-I'm sorry Maya, but I can't stay." Andy sighed. "I'm actually not feeling well. Is it okay if I take off the rest of the shift? Or just let me rest in the bunk room after I do this."

Maya nods and watches as her friend returns to stocking the Aid Car and the med kit bags. "Andy," Andy turns to face her again. "Please stay until the end of the month. At least until I can find a permanent firefighter to come in and help us out. I don't want to have random B-shift guys working with the A team."

Andy and Maya just look at each other for a minute before Andy lets out a quiet "Okay"

I want captain. I want to make captain so badly but being mad about it won't help and Maya becoming captain isn't worth losing my best friend over, not when our friendship is so much bigger than just this job. These people are my home. Andy thinks as she looks around at the people her dad had chosen to work at 19 in the barn.

When Andy is done with the Aid Car and med kits she walks around to where Vic and Travis are and hugs them, telling them she is going to head home because she wasn't feeling well. Before Andy leaves, she goes to the locker room to get changed and then she goes to the captain's office. She knocks and waits until she hears a "come in" from Maya.

"Maya, I just want you to know that I'm sorry about what I said earlier. About Vasquez and about the reason you were picked for the captain. We do respect you, Maya." Andy paused and went to sit down on a chair since she still wasn't feeling well but wanted to talk to her friend. "Maya," Andy started in a serious tone, "Carina told me about the conversation the two of you had. Despite me not really knowing her well, I'm glad she still reached out." Andy paused for a moment. "You are not the truck that tore through 19 or whatever wording you used with Carina." Maya came to sit beside Andy, so Andy grabbed Maya's hand. "We love you, Maya. even with the workouts and your clipboard and the whiteboard with our weights on it and the mandatory camping trip and-"

Maya cut her off. "Okay. Okay. I get it. I can be a lot."

"You push us when we need it and I think that's what's keeping us so strong." Andy lets go of Maya's hand and stands up with a smile on her face "Also, hold onto Carina. She seems like a keeper." Andy winks at her while Maya tries to swat her but misses. "Have a good rest of your shift Maya. I'll probably be here for the next shift. But I'll update you tomorrow night." Andy quickly hugged her and walked out, shooting her one last smile before walking out of the office, rounding the corner, coughing, and exiting the station.
