Gut-Wrenching – pt 2 (Final)

"We keep looking," Maya told her, climbing down to help Vic. The two women were searching the left side of the hole where Sullivan was found, hoping to find Andy close by. Maya was trying to move a piece of rubble but couldn't, so Vic came over to help. Please be underneath. Please be underneath. Please be underneath. Vic chanted in her head. Hoping they would find Andy under.

Vic and Maya each gripped the piece of rubble and counted "One...Two...Three" and lifted. They saw Andy underneath, face down, arm bent in the wrong direction, blood on the back of her head.

"Oh, god," Maya said while Vic brought a hand to her mouth when she couldn't feel a pulse. "Travis! We need a backboard over here now. Someone make sure there's an aid car ready!" Maya tried to hold back tears when they turned Andy over and saw that her nose was visually broken, she had a cut on her forehead and the blood had covered half of her face.

"Come on, Andy. Hang on. Hang on for us. Please." Vic held onto her hand as Travis brought down a backboard as Maya was doing chest compressions, tears starting to fall.

The three of them, along with Theo, worked to get Andy onto the backboard and up the hole. When Andy was brought up Theo resumed compressions on her and when they brought a gurney over, he stood on it, continuing compressions. When they got the aid car Maya and Vic went with her. Maya continued to do chest compressions as they hooked her up to the HCG machine.

"No pulse still," Maya said as she got ready to shock Andy. She tried to hold back her tears, but it was pointless. This was her best friend laying on a gurney, no pulse right in front of her. They shocked her once, nothing. They shocked her again, nothing. They shocked her again, nothing. Maya let out a sob.

"Maya..." Vic started, tears also falling from her eyes.

"No." Maya stopped Vic, knowing what she was going to say. "One more." Maya said and pushed the button on the machine. "Clear." Vic and Maya watched the HCG machine, waiting and hoping for a change. When they saw that she regained her pulse, they let out tears of relief and looked at each other.

"She isn't going to be okay after this." Vic said, looking down at Andy.

"No, no she isn't." Maya agreed, knowing that when Andy woke up, she would be devasted that her husband was dead. Maya looked over Andy's body, looking for any injuries she they may have missed when Maya noticed something on her left hand. "Oh, god."

"What? What is it, Maya?" Vic asked, panic on her face. Maya, unable to say anything pointed to Andy's left hand.

"No way," Vic said, looking at the diamond wedding band on Andy's finger. "When the hell did that happen?" Vic asked, looking at Maya. Maya just shrugged.

"I have no idea, Vic. That's why I'm as shocked as you." When they got to the hospital they were met by Meredith and Amelia and other nurses and residents they didn't know. They moved Andy into an ER room.

"Maya, Vic. I'm sorry but we need room to work." Amelia told them. "Wait in the waiting room and I'll come and get you as soon as we get her settled into a room." Amelia watched the two women nod and walk off. Amelia closed the door and turned to Andy. Her heart sank. The broken nose, the cut on her forehead and she could see blood on the back of the bed behind her head, so she assumed she had a horrible head injury. "Mer, I want to do a..."

"I know." Meredith interrupted. "Go," Meredith told her, and the nurses helped bring Andy to get a CT scan. Meredith waited half an hour in the room when Andy was brought back. "Any internal damage?" Meredith asked, hoping that Andy wouldn't need surgery.

"A couple of broken ribs but that's it," Amelia told her, and Meredith sighed, relieved. "She doesn't have any brain bleeds, so she doesn't need surgery." Meredith nodded. "I'm going to have Link come in to look at her arm," Amelia told her, and Meredith just nodded, watching her leave. Meredith grabbed Andy's uninjured hand and sighed.

"You need to pull through, Herrera. You have too many counting on you to leave them all behind." Meredith told her, squeezing her hand. An hour later, Maya and Vic were told they were allowed to come in after Link had finished setting Andy's broken arm and putting a cast on.

"How is she doing, Dr. Grey?" Vic asked before Maya could. "Obviously you know that her arm is broken," Vic and Maya nod in confirmation. "She got taken for a CT scan and thankfully there is no brain swelling." Meredith watched Vic and Maya let out a breath, one that, Meredith assumed, they had been holding since coming to the hospital. "She also has a couple of broken ribs." It was silent between the three women for a few moments when Vic spoke.

"There's something you're not telling us, isn't there?" Vic asked and Maya looked from Vic to Meredith.

"Dr. Grey, please tell us," Maya begged.

"She had to be placed in a medically induced coma," Meredith told them, not looking at either of them.

Two weeks later

Maya and Vic were in Andy's room after a long shift.

"I swear some shifts feel so much longer than others," Vic said, slumping down onto a chair in Andy's room.

"I know." Maya rolled her neck, trying to relieve some tension. "Today was brutal. I'm just glad we were able to make it through it."

It was silent between the two women after that. They had been together for the past 24 hours, so they spent a lot of time talking already during their shift. Both were growing more and more concerned with how long Andy had been in the coma. Maya walked over to the chair by Andy's bed and sat down.

"So, Captain Herrera. You missed yet another interesting call." Maya said and Vic raised her eyebrow.

"Really? That's what you're going to talk about right now?"

"Hell yes. Our captain needs to hear this." Maya said, trying to sound serious but quickly dropped that and laughed. Maya was about to continue talking when they heard a cough. Maya and Vic turn to the bed and see Andy's eyes slowly opening. "Andy, oh thank God." Maya breathed out, thankful her friend was awake. Andy had to blink a few times, eyes adjusting to the light before everything came rushing back to her and her heart dropped.

"Robert?" Andy asked, barely a whisper. Andy watched Vic and Maya look at each other and could feel her heart sink further.

"Andy, I'm so sorry but Robert..." Maya wasn't able to continue so Vic spoke the words she knew would break Andy.

"Andy, he died at the scene." Vic rushed out, barely able to say those words. Andy looked between the two of them, nodded and looked down.

"Andy, please talk to us." Maya pleaded, not wanting Andy to close them off but Andy just shook her head, and they watched as Andy moved her left hand, looking at the wedding ring. "Andy..." Maya was trying to hold it together but seeing how broken her best friend is was breaking her heart.

"He gave this to me before the ball," Andy whispered. "We planned to tell everyone that we wanted to renew our vows, have all our friends and my extended family be there since all of you weren't the first time," Andy told them, trying to hold her tears back. "Guess it won't be happening now." Andy scoffed and then looked up at Maya and Vic. "Please leave," Andy asked them and neither made a move to leave. "Please! Ju-Just leave me a-alone! I wa-want to be alone!" Andy begged, tears beginning to well up in her eyes.

Maya and Vic just nodded, turned to leave and closed the door behind them. They looked back into the room and saw Andy break down into sobs.
