Part Two (Final)

Carina was pacing around in the ER when she heard an aid car pull up. Carina raced to the doors and when she opened the doors she expected to see Andy holding her wife's hand, but her heart dropped further when she saw that Andy was limp on the floor of the aid car.

"What the hell happened?" Carina asked, helping lower her wife's stretcher while calling for another one.

"She was holding your wife's hand when she started to present as lightheaded. I handed her a water bottle, she took a couple of sips but then her eyes rolled back seconds later." The paramedic told her and the other residents and nurses that now surrounded them. Teddy had also come out and took the lead in Andy's care.

Carina and a few residents took Maya to a private room while Andy was wheeled in and rushed off to an OR. Carina turned her focus to her wife. They hooked her up to a heart monitor and added a second IV line, assuming that she was dehydrated.

Carina was sitting with her wife, holding her hand for what seemed like forever after they got her stabilized when there was a knock on her door. She saw Ben and Natasha.

"Hey," Natasha said. "We just wanted to see how she was doing."

"Her breathing isn't great right now. Me and other doctors have agreed that if it doesn't get any better she may need to go on a vent." Carina told them, rubbing her forehead.

Ben sighed and Natasha nodded. It was silent between the three until Warren broke the silence.

"Andy is still in surgery." Carina snapped her head up and looked at the clock. Maya had come in around 8 pm and it was now 10 pm. Andy had been in surgery for two hours now and her concern grew.

"What are her injuries?" Carina asked, looking at her wife, rubbing her finger over the top of Maya's hand.

Ben sighed again. "She had burns on her neck, some all over her right arm so she's getting those debrided and she's getting a lot of pulmonary treatments," Ben told her, and Carina frowned. That didn't sound good at all.

"Is she going to be okay?" Carina asked, worried for her wife's best friend.

Ben looked down and Natasha sighed. "She has a long road ahead of her," Ben said.

"Ben, I know my wife is right here, fighting to breathe properly but Maya cannot lose her best friend. She cannot lose Andrea." Carina said and something clicked. Losing her brother hurt like hell. If Maya had to go through losing her Andrea she would be broken in a way that no one has ever seen before. "Oh, God. Ben, truth time."

"She's had to be put on a vent, Carina," Ben admitted. "Dr. Altman tried her best to stop it from getting that bad, but Andy had a lot of smoke inhalation."

"What the hell happened?" Carina asked.

"The rest of the team and I just got here," Ross started. "She went off on her own to try to find us help when we were under our fire shelters," Ross told her, and Carina's mouth gapped open. "Yeah, I know. It was a stupid idea, but she ended up succeeding and she got the team to safety, and we were able to stop the fire in its tracks."

"Is everyone else okay?" Carina asked.

"Vic had a tree branch fall on her fire shelter and it burned her arm, but other than that, yeah. Everyone's okay. We all got checked out when we arrived." Ross told her and Carina nodded and turned to her wife.

"We'll give you some space with Maya and I'll come when we have an update on Andy," Ben told Carina and watched her nod before closing the door and leaving.
