Close Call
"Maya!" Andy called when she saw the fire surround Maya.
Maya begins to cough. "Captain Herrera! Fire's pushing in! I don't see an exit route!" Maya spoke through her radio.
"We're doing everything we can, Bishop! We got you!" Maya continued to cough.
"Herrera! Andy, are you there? I'm scared. I don't- I don't think I'm getting out of here." Maya tried not to break down.
"I'm right here, Maya. Try and concentrate on everything you have waiting for you when you get out of there. All you have to live for." Andy told her over the radio, trying to comfort her as best she could.
They were working on getting the fire out, which seemed to be taking forever. "Andy..."
"Don't you dare, Maya." Andy knew what Maya was about to say. She was losing hope.
"Andy, just listen."
"Lieutenant. Stop." Andy knew they needed to get Maya out of there and soon, but she wasn't willing to lose hope. She wasn't willing to lose her best friend.
"Captain! Just listen, please!" Maya begged. Andy stayed silent. "Be there for Carina. She's going to need you all." Andy tried to interrupt. "No. Andy. Please tell her that I love her. Tell her that her love is everything and that I'll wait for her to come home to me." Andy had to blink back her tears.
"Maya, a water drop is on the way. Hold on. Hold on, okay? You have so much to live for. Don't give up!" Andy told her, trying to keep Maya in a positive headspace.
"Andy, promise me." Maya pleaded.
"I promise, Maya," Andy said, letting a tear fall. "Maya, a water drop is almost here. Please hang on, okay?" Andy pleaded. Andy heard Maya's coughing intensify.
Andy looked up a couple of seconds later and saw the helicopter. "Okay, everybody, get down now! Maya, get down! Get down!" Andy called out and ducked along with everyone else. Once the smoke cleared she was relieved to see Maya walking through the smoke. "Oh, thank god."
"Maya, are you okay? Are you breathing okay?" Andy asked, grabbing her shoulders, and looking her friend in the eyes. "I heard you coughing. You need to tell me if you're not okay."
"Captain, I'm okay. A little wet, but I'm okay." Andy watched Maya cough and grab her water bottle, taking a sip. Maya looked okay but she was still concerned about her cough.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Andy, 19 and Tulalip Fire had managed to stop the fire in their division and were on their way back to their engine when Maya collapsed.
"Bishop!" Andy called out and rushed over to Maya. "Maya, Maya please wake up." Andy tried to shake Maya awake while fighting off her own dizziness. Andy looked up at her crew. "Get an aid car!" Andy shouted and turned Maya, so she was on her back. She put two fingers to Maya's neck, feeling for a pulse and was grateful when she felt one. Andy looked up at Ross. "She has a pulse, but her breathing is laboured. How long for an aid car?"
"IC said a few minutes." Ross looked at Maya and then back to Andy, worried about her and how she was feeling after going off by herself to look for help. "Herrera, are you okay?"
"Just worried about my friend, Chief," Andy told her, reaching for Maya's hand and holding it. "Hold on, Maya. Please hold on. You have so much to live for. You can't leave your family behind." Andy said, trying to keep her tears in.
Two minutes later, they heard sirens and then they loaded Maya into the aid car. Andy staying with her. Andy pulled out her phone and called Jo. She dialled her number and waited for her to answer.
"Dr. Wilson speaking, how can I help you?"
"Jo, it's Andy Herrera."
"Herrera? Aren't you in the middle of battling a wildfire right now?" Jo asked and then heard sirens in the background. "Who's hurt?" Jo asked knowingly and Andy closed her eyes.
"Maya Bishop," Andy said, knowing she wouldn't need to explain further.
"Shit. Do you want me to tell Carina?" Jo looked up and saw Carina down the hall.
"I know it'll suck, but please. If you can?" Andy asked.
Jo nodded before remembering Andy couldn't see her. "Yeah. I will. I'll let her know now. How far out are you?"
"15 minutes. She's stable right now though, Jo."
"Okay. Thanks for letting me know. I'll go and talk to Carina now."
"Thank you, Jo," Andy said and hung up and then looked at Maya. "Come on Bishop, you have so much to live for."
Back at the hospital
"Dr. DeLuca?" Dr. Wilson came up to Carina.
"What is it?" Carina asked, the smile still on her face from finding out she's pregnant, but it faded when she saw Jo's serious expression.
"It's Maya," Jo said, not wanting to prolong the bad news.
"No. No. No. They were heading back." Carina said, concern flooding her features. "Maya just sent me a text an hour ago."
"She collapsed. They're bringing her here and I was told she's in stable condition. That's all I know so far, Carina." Jo told her, resting a hand on Carina's arm. "I'm so sorry I wish I knew more."
"How far away is she?" Carina asked, rubbing a hand over her face, not believing that this was happening.
"About 15 minutes," Jo told her, and Carina nodded walking away and going to the ER.
Writer's block with this one-shot is kind of killing me so I'm going to break this up into two or three parts. Apologies.
