"Perhaps we were too hasty..." whispered Clodagh, pacing restlessly in the guest room at her in-laws'.
Sorscha had sat down on the bed next to the suitcase, she had already started packing. "Jane said we'll know when we're ready to move back in together. If you still need time, you can stay here."
"Yes, but we haven't even worn our wedding rings again...". She stopped in the middle of the room and looked at Sorscha with an unsettled expression on her face.
"Come here..." she spoke softly.
Clodagh approached the woman. Sorscha carefully took her hands.
" Don't worry so much. I will accept your decision, whatever it is..." Sorscha gave her a kiss on the hand.
The last therapy session with Jane went well. Jane was very proud of the couple and was in favour of them moving in together. But the therapist still seemed to have one last thing on her mind.
"I hope you were able to take a lot from our discussions and continue to apply them. However, I would like to mention one more thing.... Sorscha."
The woman looked up in surprise. "I noticed that you never cried. That's not an accusation, just something I've noticed. Is there a reason?"Now Clodagh had to look over at Sorscha as well. Jane was right. Ever since the attack, but even before that. Sorscha was never the one to cry. Clodagh had known Sorscha since they were both teenagers and she could count on one hand the number of times she had seen Sorscha cry.
" Well...... I just don't like crying..." Sorscha mumbled.
"Why?" Jane asked.
" I........... My mum went through a difficult time when I was a child. She had breast cancer. My father never let on...... I think I just want to be like my dad and always show strength..." Sorscha looked down.
"Darling, crying is a sign of strength. Please let your feelings out and don't hold anything back." Clodagh reached for her hand. Sorscha looked up and at her.
Clodagh leant her head slightly to one side. "What are you thinking about right now?"
Sorscha took a deep breath. " I've never said that before........" she stopped and didn't know if she should really say it, but Sorscha had learnt that open communication was important for a healthy relationship. " ..... I thought almost dying would be the worst feeling I would ever experience...... But the feeling when you left me was a thousand times worse.... I never want to lose you again..."
And then it happened, tears formed in Sorscha's eyes.
"I think I'll leave you two alone," Jane said softly and left the room.
Clodagh simply took her in her arms. Sorscha finally let out everything that she had pent up over the years and months.
Clodagh put the last of her clothes in the wardrobe. She was back, she was home. As she walked out of the bedroom again, something caught her eye.
There was something on the chest of drawers that needed to be put back in its rightful place.
When Clodagh came back into the living room, she saw Sorscha holding Quinn's hands. The little girl was trying to walk with Sorscha.
"She'll be walking soon!", said Sorscha happily. As soon as she had said it, Quinn pulled her legs up so that Sorscha had to hold her completely. Carefully, Sorscha lowered her back onto the blanket.
"If you say so," Clodagh said with a laugh.
She sat down on the blanket with the two of them. Quinn was playing with some building blocks in front of her.
" Darling..... give me your hand." Clodagh spoke softly.
Sorscha looked at her a little confused, but then offered her her hand.
Clodagh put her wedding ring back on her finger.
"Babe....," was all she could manage.
But Clodagh said nothing and put her own in Sorscha's hand. And held her hand out to her.
Sorscha now put the wedding ring back on her finger.
" I love you more than anything darling..."
" I love you too babe, you are the best thing that has ever happened to me in my life..."
Clodagh leant towards her wife and gave her a long kiss.
Life will continue to present them with many challenges, but together they would make it through.
