Getting out of the car, Elijah walked in front, leading the way. Sabrina, walking behind, met up with Elena and grasped her hand, offering a gentle smile. "I know it seems like I'm turning into an evil villain, but I'm trying to create peace... They're my mates, Elena, soul mates, and I'm not leaving them for some half-assed elementary friends," she shared as she unlinked her hand.
"I might be dying in a few hours, and I know that seems good to you, that all of your problems will be washed away. But I truly love them, and I think they love me. If I don't judge you for being in love with both of the Salvatores, don't judge me for being genuine soul mates with them, Elena," she spoke gently before moving to stand with Elijah, hugging his side softly.
"Below us is a cavern I used to play in as a boy. It's a network of tunnels that stretch across the entire area," Elijah said, looking toward the ground. Sabrina watched him with interest, curious about his old life.
"Perhaps it was nature's way of providing us with shelter against the savagery of the full moon. My mother said there must be a balance," he continued, his voice tightening at the mention of his mother. He pulled Sabrina closer, his grip protective.
Elena stood by, filled with sadness and envy. The Mikaelsons were so gentle with Sabrina, peacefully sharing her, something the Salvatores could never do for her. "Guys, I should probably go home," Elena spoke, breaking the moment and drawing their attention.
"It's not true. I told you that all your mother wanted was a new start," she lied as Elijah stepped gently away from Sabrina.
"I can hear your heartbeat. It jumps when you're being dishonest with me. You lied to me at the ball, and you're lying to me now. Tell me the truth," Elijah demanded, his voice steady.
Sabrina snickered, already knowing the revelation Elena was about to make.
"I never wanted this to happen," Elena confessed.
"What, Elena?" Elijah pressed.
"We were told whatever was in that coffin was going to be Klaus. When we found out it was your mother, we didn't know what to think. Since her return, she said she only wanted your family to be whole again. When she asked to see me, I thought maybe she could help, that she could find a way to kill Klaus. It's not just Klaus that she wants to kill."
"Yeah, no shit, Elena. She's killing me too," Sabrina said solemnly from the corner.
"She wants to undo the evil she created, and that means killing the thing that matters more to them than anything," Elijah added, his voice trembling with fear .
"I'm so sorry, Elijah... Sabrina," Elena said, unable to meet Sabrina's eyes.
"I wish there was something I could do to help," she added.
"You know, the one thing I've learned in my time on this earth is to be careful what you wish for," Elijah muttered. With that, he stomped a hole into the ground and placed Elena down there. Jumping back up, he stood holding Sabrina's arm and cheek.
""Rebekah is down there. She'll keep you two safe until it's over," Elijah spoke softly, looking deeply into Sabrina's eyes. Tears welled up in her eyes as the realization hit her like a tidal wave—this might be the last time she ever saw him.
"Don't cry, elskan," he whispered, his voice breaking slightly as he kissed her lips, pulling her into a tight embrace. Sabrina clung to him, her fingers digging into his back as if she could somehow anchor him to her side. The warmth of his body, the familiar scent of him, everything about this moment felt agonizingly final.
As he held her, Elijah jumped them both down into the cavern, the descent feeling like an eternity. When they landed, he kissed her forehead one last time, a lingering, tender touch that seemed to etch itself into her very soul. He pulled away slowly, his eyes never leaving hers.
"I love you, Sabrina," he whispered, his voice heavy with unspoken promises and unfulfilled dreams.
Sabrina's tears flowed freely now, each drop carrying the weight of her heartbreak. "I love you too, Elijah. Please, come back to me. Promise me you'll come back," she pleaded, her voice cracking under the strain of her desperation.
Elijah's eyes glistened with unshed tears as he gave her a small, sad smile. "I'll do everything I can," he said, his words a fragile thread of hope.
With one last look, Elijah turned and leaped out of the cavern, disappearing from her sight. Sabrina's heart shattered as the reality of their separation set in, the finality of the moment crushing her spirit. She fell to her knees, sobs wracking her body as she clung to the memory of his touch, his voice, his love.
Rebekah appeared from the shadows, her own eyes red-rimmed with tears. She knelt beside Sabrina, wrapping her arms around her. "He'll come back, Sabrina. He's strong, and he loves you more than anything. He'll come back," Rebekah whispered, though her voice was thick with her own fears.
Sabrina could only nod, her heart breaking over and over with each passing moment. The cavern's silence was deafening, filled only with the sound of her grief. She closed her eyes, trying to remember every detail of Elijah's face, the way his eyes crinkled when he smiled, the warmth of his embrace.
But the fear gnawed at her, the fear that this memory would be all she had left of him. The thought was unbearable, and it threatened to consume her. Rebekah tightened her hold, offering silent comfort, but it felt like a small solace in the face of such overwhelming sorrow.
"Elijah," Sabrina whispered into the darkness, her voice a broken plea. "Please, come back to me."
The hours stretched on, each minute feeling like an eternity. The fear of what was happening above them gnawed at her, the uncertainty of their future looming like a dark cloud. The tears flowed freely, her heart breaking with every passing moment, the pain of their separation a constant, aching void.
As the reality of their situation settled in, Sabrina vowed to hold onto the love she had for Elijah, no matter what happened. That love would be her strength, her anchor, as they faced the uncertain future together. But for now, all she could do was wait, her heart aching for the man she loved, praying with every fiber of her being that he would come back to her.
She was mated to the unkillable beings of the originals yet in the next hours they might be dead and so would she .
