Sohyun's pov

From a distance, my eyes met with Jiyoon who was walking down the hallway quite cheerfully, unlike me, energy depleting already.

“She seems awfully excited”
The one beside me commented.

I took a glimpse of Jay who was shaking his head at the girl who had just stopped in front of us. Jiyoon side-hugged both of us, seeming like she missed us over the short break.

“Enjoyed Tokyo?”
I asked her.

“You saw my post, it was fun. Brought some souveneirs, here”
She dug the front pocket of her bag and gave us a keychain each.

It had some Japanese wording that I chose to save it for later translation.

“A keychain? Really, yoon?”
Jay inspected the keychain, unimpressed, whereas Jiyoon stood there and took offence to his words.

“Sohyun, would you tell your brother to be nicer to me??”
Jiyoon turned to me instead while I laughed.

“Hyunnie, tell your little friend to get better souvenirs for us next time?”
Jay rested his arm on my shoulder, teasing the poor girl.

“What's the commotion about?”
Someone joined into the conversation.

I turned my head to be greeted by the cute face I've yearned to see over the holidays, even if it was just a week long. It felt like I spent a decade rotting in my bedroom.

Jungwon dabbed Jay up, and waved to both Jiyoon and I.

“Here's a keychain from my trip to Tokyo. Now I have one more left”
Jiyoon handed Jungwon one and held the last one meant for the missing guy.

“Where's Hee? Class is starting soon”
Jay questioned, scanning the hallways for any signs of him.

"Speak of the devil”
I muttered under my breath, secretly rolling my eyes.

That was until I spotted the tall figure coming from behind Jay, however, decided to stay quiet about it. Jiyoon immediately passed the keychain to him upon his arrival.

“Hey, did I keep you all waiting?”
He shoved his hands in his pockets.

“Nah, you're good”
Jay continued chatting with the two.

While they were catching up on things, I watched Jungwon, smiling as he talked to them. I've had feelings for him for quite some time now, but he doesn't know a thing. So far, I've only trusted Jiyoon with my secret out of the whole friend group.

Though Jay was also pretty close with me as we grew up, I could never trust him with such a secret. Jay has always been one to look out for me, and tries his best to keep me safe. However, telling him that I like Jungwon isn't something I feel like he'd keep quiet about.

Slowly, my attention shifted towards the guy who had arrived last. He was already looking at me when I accidentally made eye contact with him. Heeseung and I were the most distant.

If I must say, I'm the most uncomfortable around him out of the rest. We've never exactly expressed strong hatred towards each other, but we didn't interact much either. Even if we did, he was rude or cold most of the time.

He isn't like this with the other guys or even Jiyoon. The others are aware of it, but never spoke up. I decided to let it stay that way because I know Heeseung is one of Jay's closest friends, and I can't simply kick him out of the circle.

Jay trusts Heeseung a lot since they've been friends for five years now. That doesn't mean I have to talk to Heeseung, I just deal with it even if I didn’t favour him as much.

“Missed Jungwon?”
Jiyoon whispered to me.

“What? Um, yeah kind of”
I said shyly.

“You should make a move this semester. Come on, why wouldn't he be into you. You're the sweetest girl around”
Jiyoon encouraged me.

“I don't know..if things don't work out, I'll regret it. I don't know if it's worth the risk”
I told her quietly.

“Such a wuss. You'll regret it more if you don't try giving it a shot”
She scoffed jokingly, though it was true.

“Whatever. What are we having in the first period?”
I asked Jiyoon since we shared most classes together.

She took a look at the new timetable and let out an audible sigh.

“Bio. Gosh, I can't sleep even if I wanted to because that old man's bald head is so shiny, the light reflected off of it forces me to stay awake”
Jiyoon complained, and a little too loudly.

The three boys overheard her fake distressed voice and stared at her in disbelief. Afterwards, I broke into laughter and so did the others. With that, we decided to head to class. Sadly, jay was the only one who was in a different class, so we went our separate ways.

Mr Kim arrived in class, and we greeted him. Before we could sit down, he flashed a new seating plan on the screen for the new semester.

I mumbled a curse when realising it was Heeseung who I'm going to be sitting next to for the next few months. Just my luck.

We were placed at the very back and I sank into my seat while Heeseung took the one on my left, not sparing me a glance. When everyone finally found their new seats, I was relieved to find out that Jungwon sat right in front of me.

He turned around and made a circle with his mouth, looking between Heeseung and I.

“It's gonna be real quiet back there”
He teased before turning back to the front, secretly laughing to himself.

“This year will go by quickly, and I can't afford any of you to get distracted by your classmates so no asking for changes for the seating plan, understood?”
Mr Kim asked.

He failed miserably by trying to do that because there's a handsome distraction sitting right in front of me.

Everyone had their textbooks opened. Mr Kim directed a question to the class, but all he was met with was yawns and the student's bored faces. Jiyoon sitting at the side of the room was already drooling as she dozed off.

“How about Sohyun? Stand up and answer my question”
The bald man looked at me.

I stood up, and I calmly flipped the pages to look for an answer, very much the opposite of the internal panic I was experiencing. I looked in front of me, hoping that Jungwon would help me out, but he just stared and waited for an answer.

“God, this is so easy”
I heard Heeseung mutter which added to my annoyance.

“We're waiting, Ms Sohyun. If you can't answer, call out another student to help you”
Mr Kim said, impatient.

“I choose..”
I looked around the class.

“I can answer, sir”
Heeseung suddenly raised his hand.

He went on to explain, and Mr Kim of course praised his perfect explanation. I sat back down when told, now feeling irritated by his smart *ss.

He had always had this hidden cockiness about how he's so good at everything, and it genuinely pisses me off that he's aware of it.

Mr Kim was wrong, it's going to be a long year ahead of me.
