The glistening stones. Orange, red, blue, purple, green and yellow. I felt a strange sensation as the stones were placed one by one into the golden glove- a fear of the power in front of us, an anger of what it had done before. "I should be the one to do it." Thor declared, stepping forward eagerly. But Steve and Tony argued. "No, we haven't thought about it." Steve said. "We should at least discuss it." Tony insisted. Thor scoffed and shook his head. "I'm the strongest avenger, I should be the one to take responsibility." He tried to lurch forward again but Tony stood in front of him, backing him away. "No, It's not about that just-" Thor continued to insist, getting louder and louder. "Please." He said suddenly. "Just let me do something good, let me fix it." I felt sorry for Thor, the guilt I knew he held He felt he could have done something more. But none of us could have.
"Look it's not just that the glove is channeling enough energy to light up a continent." Tony told him. "I'm telling you, you're in no condition." Thor frowned and then laughed. "What do you think is causing through my veins? Lightning." Probably among a lot of alcohol. "No." Bruce said suddenly. He sighed, looking up from the ground. "Lightning won't help you." Thor looked at him with a fallen face. "It's radiating mostly gamma and I'm full of that." He laughed slightly. "It's almost like I was made for this." Tony stepped forward cautiously, "Are you sure about this?" He asked and Bruce nodded. "I'm strong enough. I can do it."
Tony paced anxiously. "Ok remember." He said, stopping and turning to Bruce. "Everyone Thanos snapped away five years ago, just bring them back to now." He sighed shallowly, "Don't change anything from the last 5 years." Bruce nodded once and looked down at the glove. Everyone in the room stepped back, lowering their masks. Tony beat his chest once with his right hand, metal pouring over him. In front of him a holographic shield formed. I stepped closer to clint, making painful eye contact. I closed my eyes, felt the energy pulsing through me and pushed the golden shield out from deep inside me. Strangely after 5 years of neglect, it seemed to have grown stronger, as if biding it's time. I pushed it until it encapsulated me and Clint. In the gap between us, I felt her standing there. I felt Natasha with us, holding onto us.
"FRIDAY, activate barn door protocol." Tony spoke and in response thick metal walls enclosed us, covering every window and door. "Everybody comes home." Bruce muttered. With held breathes, we watched Bruce slip his hand into the glove. Suddenly, bright lights flashed as the energy pulsed through him, dragging Bruce to his knees as he winced. Veins of power swam up his arm, across his shoulder, ensuing further groans and grunts of pain. With a struggle, Bruce used all his strength to hold his arm up. "Take it off!" Thor bellowed as scorch marks started to rip deep into Bruce's skin. Steve shook his head. "Bruce are you ok?" One more large bellow and then Bruce nodded and through pants, "I'm ok."
He grunted then with one almighty effort, held his arm up. Time seemed to slow, stop almost. All my previous doubts rushed through my head but were quickly replaced by Natasha's voice. "Hopeful." We all waited in fear and anticipation. Except not everyone was there. "Where's Nebula?" I muttered, too quiet for anyone to hear. Bruce almost screaming, held his middle finger and thumb together and snapped them.
I crashed to the floor as a bright white light filled the space. I suddenly felt I was in a hospital, like a new born baby being born and entering the bright scary world as I opened my eyes. "Bruce!" Tony yelled stumbling to his feet and rushing to where Bruce lay unconscious. Beside me clint, just getting to his feet, reached his arm out to me. I grabbed it and pulled me up. Selfishly, I didn't even look at Bruce. I didn't check if he was ok because I was suddenly filled with a strange sensation. One of wholeness and calm and I knew it had worked. I don't know how but somehow, inside of me, I could feel he was back. I could feel Peter was alive.
I walked towards the windows as the metal doors lifted. The sun shone brightly through. I stood at the window, staring out, hearing a bird sing in the trees. But above that, I could hear noise. More noise than I heard in five years. A buzz of people.
"It worked." I said.
