Day 17

Piper stepped down the last step, peeking her head around the corner hoping to catch the end of the father and son's argument. Travis stood against the door that faced the one Chris was hauled up in. His eyes caught her, and she felt her stomach drop and her face flush with embarrassment. "I'm sorry–I'll just–"

"Maybe you could, I don't–I just don't know how to get through to him." His tone was laced with defeat.

The two switched places, as Piper whipped her nervous sweaty palms onto the front of her pants. Debating on how to go about something like this. Putting her fist up to knock but chickening out.

Come on Piper just knock.

She took her fist up and knocked, "It's me." She was met with silence, waiting an extra minute before speaking again. "Look, I figured that you could use the company. Maybe a wall to vent too? I know what you're going through and I thought–"

The door violently swung open. His eyes were red and watery while his expression was everything that read anger. "How? How do you have any idea on what I'm going through?!"

Her eyes started to tear up. She understood that he was grieving. He had gone through so much in such a short window of time. Piper would rather day then say out loud how selfish she thought Liza was when she got onto that truck. She had no choice on rather she could stay or go but Liza did. Then in the short time Chris had his mother back she was given mercy in order to not turn into one of those monsters. All that aside it still hurt someone she had a friendship with. One of the few friendships she missed while locked away. "I just thought–"

"You thought wrong! I don't need any of you! Not my dad. Not you. Not a single one of your weird fucking sisters." He shouted before slamming the door fully shut. Leaving Piper standing there with watery doe eyes. Looking down at the fake metal ring that Lottie had gotten from a gumball machine.

Taking a breath as she took a step back away. Trying to put distances between her and what just happened. She hadn't slept. Spencer insisted that they stayed in the same cabin for the night. She laid there staring at the wall hearing the noises of her family moving around. Sounds of the blankets rustling, Gomez going from person to person, and finally just as she saw the blue hue of the morning sky she heard her sister leave. Knowing it was Lottie from how she groaned stretching her body. Knowing it was her after years of hearing her groan and climbing from the first real soreness after her first practice of the season.

It was like all the exhaustion had hit her body. She hadn't been asleep since the night before the military took her. Her mind didn't want her to sleep. Afraid that if she did then she would wake up and be back inside that cage, except she would be alone. No Nick. No Strand. No people. All alone.
