The night air was hot and sticky.  It was too dark to make out the water, but you could hear the waves gently lapping at the shoreline.  The sand that was once burning hot earlier was now cool under your fingertips.  The lull of the ocean nearly soothed your eyelids closed.

"Hinata?" you asked.

"Hmm?"

Hearing his sleepy reply anchored you to this world, keeping your mind from drifting away in the tides.  His features looked soft under the glow of the moonlight.  The redhead lay sprawled on his back, arms folded behind his head as he stared at the stars.  Slowly, he turned to face you, propping himself up with his elbow.

"Do you ever wonder how big the world really is?  And how small we are?" you spat suddenly.  That was not what you had wanted to say at all, but under the stars, staring at your crush of three years, you found yourself nervously rambling about the universe and its workings.

"Sometimes," he replied.

Over the course of high school, he had simmered down a lot.  Hinata was still highly extroverted with enthusiasm that rivaled that of a kid in a candy store.  But he had also developed a quieter, softer side that you hoped he only showed to you.  Because it was this charismatically cute side of him that had ignited your crush in the first place.

"Do you wonder what life would be like if we never met?" you ventured.

Hinata lay back down.  "I try not to.  I'd be a train wreck without you, Y/N.  You know that."

"But maybe you would have met someone else who could have been a better friend.  Someone more selfless who could have provided you unconditional friendship."  At this point, you weren't sure who's side you were on.  You had wanted to start this talk hoping to scope out how he felt.  And now here you were, putting yourself down.

"If Kageyama were my best friend, I'd be in therapy," Hinata joked.  "You're one of the most selfless people I know.  Even just now, the others wanted to play video games back in the hotel, but you were the only one who agreed to venture onto the beach at night with me and look at the stars.  I don't even know if you really wanted to come out here this late.  You knew I would just chill with the others if no one wanted to go, right?  So you decided to come."

He'd read you like a book.

"You're a wonderful friend, Y/N.  Sometimes, I wonder what we'd be like if we weren't friends," he said slowly.

Your heart sank.  "You mean like strangers?"

Hinata sat up, and so did you.  He studied your worried eyes and then glanced away.  "Like lovers."

The moonlight worked in your favor, showing you splotches of red that creeped up his neck and highlighted his cheeks.  He looked beautiful with that bashful look on his face.

"It's okay.  You don't have to say anything," Hinata blurted out.  "Over the course of high school, we've gotten closer, and you've become so important to me, that I honestly can't imagine life without you.  Wow, it's crazy. how much confidence I have in the dark."

You reached out a hand, letting your smaller fingers wrap around his bigger ones.  His hands were calloused after long hours of volleyball practice.  You gave them a reassuring squeeze.

"Shoyo, I don't think I can live without you and your witty banter.  Or your spontaneous decisions.  There's a fine line between friendship and love, and I've always wanted to ask you if we could cross it."

Hinata shivered at the sound of his first name.  He extended his arms so that he could hug you.  His clothes smelled like sunscreen and orange creamsicles.  You nestled against his chest so perfectly, it was almost like you were two shards of pottery that had found each other after being shattered.

"I like when you do that," Hinata nearly purred.  You hadn't realized you were playing with his hair out of habit.  "Your hands are so gentle.  Playing such an aggressive sport, I didn't realize how a touch could be this soft."

You let one of your hands drift towards his cheek, rubbing your thumb slowly in circles.  And almost as if it were the most natural thing in the world, he kissed your cheek.  And then your nose.  And then the soft part of your neck underneath your ear.

"Why are you teasing me," you asked jokingly.

Hinata looked away, furiously blushing.  "if I kiss you in the dark, I won't be able to see the cute expression on your face afterwards.  So you'll have to wait until later."

You laughed at his silly response and went back to nuzzling against him.  "But how am I supposed to wait until later when it feels like time has stopped?"

Hinata obliged you with a peck.  It was the most he could manage in his flustered state.  And the two of you lay back down in the sand, creating made-up constellations in the sky as the steady drone of the waves hummed under a lovely full moon.

Author's Note: Wow, it has been FOREVER!  Is this what a bear feels like when it comes out of hibernation?  I don't feel like the same person I was since I last logged into this account  to write.  I'm sure every one of you has gone through trials, tribulations, and character development.  I felt a sudden urge to write something soft.  Watching the Haikyuu movie reminded me how much I love the characters and sent me down a rabbit hole of hyperfixation :)

Question of the imagine: If you could choose any place to confess to your crush where would it be?
