Tanaka stared at you in wonder as you explained to the group the concept of seagrass patterns in the intertidal coast of the ocean. He'd been grouped with you and a few others for a marine ecology project, and you were taking the time to teach him the topic since he usually zoned out in class.
"Does that make sense?" you asked.
Tanaka looked down at his notes–a combination of his messy handwriting interlaced with your neat print on the side. You'd even made some small drawings to help him visualize these said grass patterns.
"Yes, I think so."
You smiled at him, and he saw a proud twinkle in your eyes behind your round-rimmed glasses. "Okay, I'll leave you to write that part up, and I'll work on the biodiversity aspect."
Tanaka nodded, and the two of you worked side-by-side in the empty classroom. Every so often, he glanced over, realizing how focused you were. If he hoisted himself on one of the desks and started tap dancing, he figured you'd hardly notice.
Glancing at your watch, you took in the sun starting to set, bathing the room in an orange glow. Tanaka had dark circles under his eyes, and you felt bad about keeping him at school late.
"Why don't you finish up at home?" you suggested. "If you have any questions, you can message me."
"Are you going home, too?" he asked.
You shook your head. "I know I'll end up goofing off, so I'm gonna tough it out here. No need for you to do the same, though."
Tanaka steeled his resolve, especially since he had volleyball practice in a couple hours. You'd gone to great lengths to teach him, so the least he could do was stay by your side and finish up his part. At some point, the two of you relocated to the Karasuno volleyball gym, you typing away in the bleachers.
"Um, I know you're working hard, but just keep your head up every now and then for stray balls. Wouldn't want you getting hit," Tanaka joked.
You nodded before diving back into your research project.
"Who's the cutie?" Noya asked, nudging his best friend.
Tanaka laughed. "That's Y/N, bro. Come on, you really haven't seen her? She's in our class. We're in a group project together."
Noya hummed in acknowledgement. "I guess I don't pay attention to the lectures or the people."
The other boys took notice of you, and Tanaka could tell that his warning had gone through one ear and out the other. You typed so fast, it looked like you were trying to hack into a top secret database.
"Let's be careful today, guys," Daichi grinned, nodding in your direction.
After practice, Tanaka climbed up to the bleachers, finishing his part and helping proofread yours. Everything looked perfect. With an hour to spare, you submitted the paper online and shut your laptop.
Ennoshita and a few other of the second years made their way towards you.
"We've never seen Tanaka work this hard," Ennoshita began. "You must be a miracle worker."
"He's a fast learner," you nudged your partner.
Ennoshita cleared his throat. "Anyway, I wanted to invite both of you to my birthday party coming up. Feel free to bring a plus one!"
Tanaka watched the color drain from your face. And as the group of guys walked away, you started voicing your thoughts.
"I don't have anything to wear let alone someone to bring," you panicked.
