Two days passed without any news from Ryan. I knew he was busy taking care of his mother, so I didn't reach out to him or send any more messages. I gave space, it was better. He hasn't responded to my messages either, and the lack of responses is starting to weigh heavily on my heart.
That morning, I ran into Cole as he explored the city. He was leaning in front of a surf shop.
— Hi Jennie. — he said, approaching. - How are you?
— I am good and you? — I replied, trying to sound casual.
— I'm taking. Want to go for a walk?
I agreed, and we started walking side by side. Cole was easy to talk to, and we soon engaged in light conversation about the city, places he liked to visit, and other trivia.
— Jennie. — he said after a while, with a more serious tone. — Do you have feelings for Ryan?
I was taken by surprise by the question, but I knew I had to be honest.
— I don't know, Cole. I've only known him for a short time, so... I don't really know. And besides, you know, I'm leaving soon.
He nodded, with a bit of disappointment in his eyes, but still smiling.
— I really enjoyed meeting you. And... I'd like to get to know you better, if you want too.
— Thank you, Cole. You are a cool guy. We can make the most of the time I still have here.
We continued our walk, and even did some shopping together. With his tips, I bought a wetsuit and a board, although I had no idea if I would use them after leaving Cannon Beach.
The next morning, I go to the beach to take photos, occupy my mind and not be so anxious waiting to hear from Ryan. My mom said she saw him at the hospital when she was visiting her friend, Ryan's mom, Lauren.
To my surprise, I see Ryan sitting on the sand, looking at the sea. He seemed lost in thought, and my heart ached for him. I walk over to him and sit next to him, in silence for a few minutes.
— Hi Ryan. — I begin calmly, fearfully. — It's good to see you.
— How are you? — he asks.
— I am fine. And how are you?
— I am going...
— I... heard about it, from your mother. How is she?
— Trying to be strong, as always.
He sighs deeply, his gaze low and melancholy.
— It's going to be okay, Ryan.
— I don't know, Jennie. I am afraid.
— Hey, your mother is a warrior, she's going to take this to heart. Be strong for her, and trust that everything will work out.
He finally looks at me.
— I'm sorry I didn't respond to your messages.
— All good. You have a lot on your mind, and I bothered you by sending messages.
— You never bother, Jennie. — he forces a smile. — And what have you been doing?
— Well, I bought a wetsuit and a board. Cole gave me some tips and helped me choose.
— You seem to be closer.
— I met him in town, and it ended up happening. We're not that close.
Ryan frowns and looks back at the sea. He sighs once again, running a hand through his messy hair.
