The Bronx, NY
Omniscient POV
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
It was the first day back from Winter break at Frederick Douglass Academy. Many of the students were excited to be back, showing off all of their Christmas gifts. While others were struggling to get back into the routine of going back to school, wishing they'd had a longer break.
Toriana was neither of those two types of students. With her ever-changing life she had become a loner by default and had learned to take every day as it came. She'd started a new school for her 10th grade year and had yet to make any friends. She honestly hadn't even bothered trying this school year. She hated constantly being snatched away from her friends and her Aunt Melinda never bothered trying to stay in contact with the other parents.
You see Toriana was born in Brooklyn to a mother who disappeared shortly after her birth, leaving the identity of her father a mystery. As a result of this she was placed in the care of her Aunt Melinda who was pregnant herself and stuck in a toxic marriage with her husband Dominic. Once Amber was born, her aunt quickly found herself overwhelmed from the stresses of parenthood and her crumbling marriage.
As a means of coping she turned to alcohol meaning the girls often saw her at her worst. Dominic was hardly around, and Melinda was often drunk meaning the family often dealt with unwanted attention, which is why they moved around so much. They often spoke about "fresh starts" yet from Toriana's eyes, nothing ever changed. Some days she felt as though she'd been born cursed, always unable to escape the dark clouds that loomed over her head.
The sound of the bell brought Toriana out of her thoughts as she gathered her things to head to gym class. As she walked she noticed Amber surrounded by her current rotation of friends. Though the girls were cousins and close in age, they were polar opposites and it showed based off of their lack of interaction outside of home.
When Toriana arrived at class, she was happy to see that today was a free day. She made her way to her usual spot in the bleachers pulling out a new ball of yarn and her crochet hook to start working on a new pattern. She enjoyed both knitting and crocheting often finding peace in the process. As Toriana became lost in her own world, she unknowingly attracted the attention of a small group of boys.
"Aye bruh look at her." Isaiah spoke to his friends with pointing across the gym at Toriana.
"Who is that?" TJ asked with a laugh, "She in my homeroom, I forgot her name though." Dante spoke.
"It look like she knitting, my grandma be doing that shit." Isaiah said as they watched her intently.
"Her weird ass kinda cute aint it?" TJ questioned earning nods from all the boys.
"Imma go talk to her." Kai said making his friends smack their teeth.
"Here his goofy ass go." Dante responded earning exaggerated laughs from the others, "Bro I'm not even on nothing weird, just on some friendly shit." Kai defended as he walked away from his friends.
Once in the bleachers, he sat a comfortable distance away from the girl causing her to stop what she was doing to look up at him.
"Hey, how you doing? I'm Kai." He introduced with a bright smile while extending his hand towards her.
"Toriana." She politely responded before accepting his handshake.
"I like that." He told her genuinely earning a small smile from her, "So wassup with you? What you doing over here knitting by yourself?" He questioned while motioning towards the yarn in her lap.
