TWENTY EIGHT

VESTA'S POV

I laid on Anna's guest bed, staring at the ceiling. My mind kept replaying that moment on the rooftop. Dr. Kim's lips on mine, his arms around me, the way my heart raced. I groaned, covering my face with a pillow. "What's wrong with me?" I muttered into the fabric.

"Ves?" Anna's voice came from the doorway. "You okay here?"

I lowered the pillow, looking at my best friend. "I did something really stupid, Anna."

She raised an eyebrow, coming to sit on the edge of the bed. "Okay, spill. What happened?"

I took a deep breath. "I kissed Dr. Kim."

Anna's eyes widened. "Dr. Kim? As in, Miguel's stepdad Dr. Kim? The hot papi chulo? "

I nodded miserably. "It was at that rooftop bar you dragged me to. He was there for a colleague's birthday. We were talking, and then it just happened."

A slow grin spread across Anna's face. "Well, well, well. Look at you, kissing hot older men. I knew it was going to happen. I just knew it."

"Anna!" I threw the pillow at her. "It's not funny. It's wrong. So wrong."

She caught the pillow. "Why is it wrong? You're single now."

"He's Miguel's stepfather, literally my ex boyfriend's ' STEPFATHER ' " I pointed out. "And he was my doctor. He's not single, he's literally married. It's complicated."

Anna shrugged  "Life is complicated, sweetie. But that doesn't mean you should ignore your feelings."

I sat up, hugging my knees to my chest. "What feelings? It was just a stupid, impulsive kiss."

"Uh-huh," Anna said clearly not buying it. "And that's why you've been moping around for days, right? Because it meant nothing?"

I opened my mouth to argue, but no words came out. Anna smiled knowingly. "Face it, Vesta. You're falling for him."

"I am not. " I protested sharply. "I can't be. It's too soon after Miguel, and Dr. Kim is- he's-"

"Handsome? Intelligent? Caring? Would do anything for you?" Anna supplied helpfully.

I groaned. "You're not helping."

Anna scooted closer, putting an arm around me. "Look, I know it's scary. And yeah, it's a bit complicated. But if he makes you happy, if there's a real connection there, don't you owe it to yourself to at least explore it?"

I shook my head, feeling tears prick at my eyes. "It's not that simple, Anna. You don't understand."

"Then help me understand," she said gently. "What's really going on in that head of yours?"

I took a deep breath, trying to sort through the jumble of emotions. "It's just every time I'm around him, I feel this pull. Like I can't help but be drawn to him. And when we kissed- god, Anna, it was like everything just clicked into place. "

Anna nodded. "Thatd what I'm talking about, Ves. Everything feels right into place when you're with certain someone and that certain someone can only be the one you love. "

"But it can't be. " I exclaimed , my frustration was bubbling up. "He's Miguel's stepfather. He's married. He was my doctor. There are so many reasons why this is wrong."

"Are there?" Anna challenged. "Or are those just excuses because you're scared?"

I stared at her, caught off guard by her bluntness. "What?"

She sighed, squeezing my shoulder. "Ves, I've known you for years. I've seen you in a relationship before with Miguel. But I've never seen you like this with him. Trust me , you're happy around Dr. Kim but you don't want to accept it. Because you're scared of loosing without even trying. "
