Alina's POV:
When I arrived back at the Grand Palace, I immediately went straight to my room.
"I'll be with you in a little bit. I just need to get our prisoners situated." Aleksander said.
I needed to speak to Genya. To tell them our friends were caught, but more importantly, that David was here.
"Genya?!" I called out, walking into Aleksander's room.
I opened the door to my room, and there she was, sitting on a chair, reading a letter.
"Alina." She said slowly, softly, sadly.
"Genya." I sighed in relief. "I'm so glad you're here right now. I need to tell you something super important."
"Yeah, it's okay, I already know." Genya said sadly.
"Why are you sad, aren't you excited? Well, except for the fact that's he's in the dungeon right now, but he's here and you can see him! You have permission from your queen." I say with a smile, feeling happy to be with Genya, trying to ignore the regret and guilt in my stomach.
"Wait- what? What are you talking about Alina? I'm talking about your wedding-" Genya says, confused.
My happiness instantly deflates. "Yeah, Aleksander told me when we were in the coach..."
"Did he tell you anything else?" Genya says, now feeling sympathetic.
"No.. why?" I say as she passes me the letter, and my eyes widen in shock.
"2 weeks!?!?" I gasp and flop onto my bed. "I don't want to get married in two weeks, thats too soon! I don't even want to get married at all."
Genya takes my hand and squeezes it. "Because of you being queen, you saved our friends." She says softly.
"NO I DIDN'T!" I sob into the pillow, the waterworks going on full blast. "Aleksander captured them..."
"What!?!?" Genya screams, jolting upwards. "But you're queen! He said he would let them escape!!!"
She runs her hands through her thick red hair. "What were you so happy about, then?"
I roll over to face Genya. "At least you'll get to see David." I try for a smile, but it probably looks like a lopsided smiley face a 5 year old would draw.
"David. David is here." Genya says, losing focus. "Where can I see him? Do you know?"
I shake my head, and start crying again. "I can't believe I let the Darkling do this! It's all my fault!!"
"No it's not Alina, you didn't let the Darkling do this, he forced you to. But remember what I said. Ravka will be under a great rule even though it's under the Darkling, because you're the queen. You're the mercy we will have when the Darkling is cruel. We are safe because of you. Your sacrifice means everything to us, Alina. You didn't do this for nothing."
I sniffle. "Thank you Genya." She passes me a tissue.
"Wipe away your tears, Alina."
"I just wish we could somehow reverse time and have them never get caught." I mope, pushing away my tear-stained pillow.
"Well, we can't do that, but what if we break them out?" Genya whispers, a mischevious look on her face.
I sit up, liking the idea. "What's your plan?"
---
I take Genya by the hand to the dungeons, where our friends are most likely are, and where Aleksander most likely is. We're right.
