Alina's POV:
I woke up with a gasp.
At first, everything was loud, then it was silent. It felt like someone slammed bricks on my ears.
I could hear the sound of water running, but it was distant. I could hear footsteps echoing down a hallway, but it faded. I could hear my heart beating.
My hearing went back to normal after a few minutes.
My vision was blurry. I could see but my brain couldn't comprehend where I was. Wasn't it just dark? Why was there light?
There was an aroma of something sickly sweet. It made me feel nauseous. There was tea at my bedside. I grabbed it. It was still warm.
My vision cleared, and I realized I was back in the Darkling's quarters. Correction, our quarters.
Why did I feel so weird?
Then I remembered. I was in the dungeon. The last thing I remember was being held by guards.
Then darkness.
To be honest, I was always fine with darkness. I wasn't afraid of the dark. Mal was. He always needed a light.
Mal. My heart twisted when I thought of him, alone in the dungeon, waiting for the day I would finally help them escape.
The water running in the background stopped. Where was that coming from?
Oh, the bathroom. Someone is taking a shower. Wait. Aleksander's taking a shower.
I cursed under my breath. All I felt was anger and hate towards him. I wanted to punch him and torment him and-
STOP ALINA. Stop thinking this way! Why are you so angry? Why are you thinking like that? You don't want to become a monster.
My heart filled with guilt, washing most of the anger away. A bit of annoyance lingered.
I slid out of the bed, but I immediately fell backwards onto the bed. It felt like when I stood up, the world's weight came crashing down on me.
I tried again, but I fell once more. Then, my head starting hurting. I pressed my palm against my temple, but it didn't feel better.
What did the Darkling do to me?
I looked at the untouched tea sitting on my bedside table. Should I drink it? What if it's tainted with poison?
No. Aleksander wouldn't do that. He would have no reason to.
I grabbed the cup, my grip a bit shaky, and took a sip. I felt immediate relief. The strength in my hand returned. My head felt lighter.
I drank a bit more before I heard the sound of a door opening. Aleksander came out of the bathroom, his hair wet and a towel wrapped around him.
He walks over to his clothes and changes right in front of me. I look away before I could see.
"Alina. You're awake." He said with a sigh of relief.
"Why, did you think I wouldn't wake up?" I snap back, my annoyance coming back.
"No. The drug was only supposed to knock you out for a couple of hours. Did you drink your tea?" He said grabbing the clothes he left on the bed.
"You drugged me!?!" I shout, finally realizing why I was feeling so weird.
"Of course. How could I get you back to our room without you putting up a fight. I mean, you can be very feisty sometimes." Aleksander says with a chuckle.
