Alina's POV:

I pickpocket the guard standing on the left. Neither guards seem to notice. Hopefully the one on the left is one of Aleksander's favorite guards, so he doesn't die.

As I walk down the stone steps, my anxiety rises.

I need to do this quick and get back before Aleksander notices.

My eyes adjust to the darkness, and I walk over to the cells.

"Hello?" I whisper softly, then scrambling noises follow.

"Alina?" Mal says, gripping the bars.

"Yes, it's me." I let go of the light shrouding me.

"Is it time?" Tamar says eagerly, then motions for everyone to get up.

"It's about 12. We need to do this fast, before Al- Kirigan finds me." I say, and I grab the silver key.

I unlock all their cells, and Mal rushes to me, engulfing me in a hug.

"Mal- we need to do this later. We need to get out of here first." I say, pushing him away.

I can't ignore the hurt on his face, but he begrudgingly agrees.

"Everyone get close and hold each other's hands." I say, and I start summoning.

I glow a bit, but the light simmers down as I bend it around my friends, turning them invisible.

"Woah- I can't even see my own hands." Harshaw exclaims.

"How do we know how to follow you?" Tolya asks, then shuffling follows.

"OW!" Zoya shouts, and I turn towards the noise.

Multiple people shush her.

"I will lead Mal, then you all follow. Keep your footsteps quiet. Make sure Oncat doesn't make any noise. If anything, we can fight the Darkling and kill him on the spot."

Everyone turns quiet as I start walking. There is a faint sound of footsteps echoing in the dungeon.

I slow the pace as we walk past the guards, who don't seem to notice anything.

Until Oncat meows.

"Did you hear that?" The guard on the right says.

"I did. It sounded like a cat." The guard on the left responds.

They scan the room, and one of them looks directly at me.

"I don't see anything, do you?"

"I don't. It could just be a stray kitty who somehow got into the palace."

The guard on the left shrugs. "Could be. Or maybe we're just hearing things."

"Ugh. I wish we were postitioned at the King and Queen's wedding. We could've had some champagne. But nope, instead we're postitioned in a creepy, faintly lit hallway, in front of a dungeon, where a bunch of crazy, dangerous prisoners are locked up." The guard on the right complains.

"Stop complaining Niko. We must follow King Kirigan's orders. Those prisoners defied the crown. They deserved to be locked up."

The guard on the right scoffs. "What do you know about the prisoners?"

"Well, King Kirigan told me they kidnapped the Queen and tried to brainwash her. Or the Apparat brainwashed her. Something like that. Whatever they did, they tried to turn her against Ravka and put the sobachka back on the throne. Thank the saints the King arrested them." The guard on the left says.
