Timeskip - A couple weeks later

Alina's POV:

Over the course of the last couple of weeks, I had visited my friends a whopping total of three times. Aleksander kept me busy with the Fjerda business, and we made sponetaneous trips to the borders.

I was hoping Aleksander wouldn't find any drüskelle or evidence that Fjerda was breaking the treaty, but we did.

One of Aleksander's grisha came back with a report, and off we were to the interrogation room to speak with our prisoners.

The soldiers captured two drüskelle, both found guilty of capturing and killing Grisha.

"Alexei, send out the notice that I prepared earlier." Aleksander says to one of his soldiers, who nods and scurries away.

One of the two men groaned in the chair. Aleksander barely looked at him.

I tried to keep my focus on Aleksander, but my eyes kept drifting back to the two men, covered in blood and scars from the torture they had to endure.

And yet, they still said nothing.

"Set us free- and King Grimjer will give you a full pardon-" The shorter one rasped, and Aleksander and I made eye contact.

From what we were observing, it appeared that neither of them knew about the treaty.

We both said nothing.

The only sounds came from the taller one coughing and the dripping of blood.

"It is King Grimjer who will be needing the pardon." Aleksander said, not interested in conversation. "Were you there?"

"We don't know what you're talking about-" The taller one said, the blood from his forehead dripping into his eyes.

"The military camp. On the outskirts of the Shadow Fold, you were there to scout out the group of deserters." Aleksander said.

Deserters. Is that what my friends were? Homeless people, moving around the continent, never having a stable home?

"We were only there as a precaution, just in case if it was something major. We were only protecting our country. That's all we do as drüskelle." The taller one said, and I noticed he had curly blond hair, which was familar.

Aleksander let a blade of shadow strike the man, when it made contact the shadows sunk into his skin.

His friend screamed in horror, while he himself screamed in pain.

I wanted to help the guy, both of them, but something inside me urged me not to.

Was it fear? Was it loyalty? Or was it...

No. I can't think that way. You're the Sun Summoner, Alina, you're the Sun Saint. A Saint. You're nothing like him.

Aleksander glared at him. "There's no use for your lies. If you were there at the camp, you would've known about the treaty."

"I-I don't k-know anything-" The tall one said, gasping through pain. "I only found out little from my son."

Both Aleksander and I looked up at the heartrender standing next to the two drüskelle, doing his best not to look mortified.

"It's true." The heartrender says, his dark brown hair bobbing as he nods. He couldn't be any younger than I was.

"Who is your son?" I say, finally feeling less sick.

He stays quiet, but looks conflicted.

Aleksander starts summoning another blade of shadow, but the shorter one stops him by pleading.
