Sarthak's POV
A day passed after Prerna proposed (or rather, threatened) to marry me. She was still in hospital, under observation.
Her mother, Divya Mathur, and Bhabhi stayed in the hospital for the night, while her father did not come to see her even once.
Bhabhi came back this morning, and the family sat together for breakfast. I felt Bhabhi's heavy, sharp gaze on me. I shifted in my seat and kept my eyes on the plate, not daring to look up.
The weight of her gaze only increased when she furiously whispered something to Shobhit Bhai and he too joined her in the 'glare at Sarthak till he burns' contest.
"How's Prerna?" Maa concerned about her future daughter-in-law.
The family was unaware the severity of the reason why Prerna was rushed to the hospital.
"Much better." Bhabhi informed, keeping her gaze on me for an extra second before shifting it to Maa. I relaxed feeling less burdened. "Talking and making unfunny jokes like before."
"What exactly happened to her?"
"She starved herself due to stress, which is why she fainted. She is fine now, though." Bhabhi did not tell the 'self harm' part.
My hand flexed as the picture of her unconscious and dull body flashed before my open eyes.
We had our breakfast in silence and only when it was about to end, I decided to speak.
"Ahem, uh-oh, haha, peoples." I chuckled nervously, gaining their attention. "I have an announcement."
I met everyone's eyes one by one while they waited for me to continue, looking very bored. Only Bhabhi and Bhai seemed distantly interested.
"Speak now, will you? We do not have all day." Dipti said impatiently. I resisted the urge to argue with her. Why do siblings have to be so annoying?
"I..." taking a deep breath, I gathered some courage. "I'm getting married."
I dropped the bomb, expecting an explosion but nothing happened. Their bored look deepened and they focused back on eating.
Dipti scoffed beside me. "Why do you always have to embarrass yourself?"
My brows knitted at the unseriousness. "But I am getting married." I repeated, feeling frustrated at their lack of interest in a serious topic. I faced Dadi. "Dadi, at least you should believe me?"
"Hmm hmm, I do." Dadi chuckled, and my frustration grew more.
"When is the wedding, by the way? 30th of February?" Dad joked and everyone joined him.
Bade papa joined the torture, AKA joke sessions, to my dismay and added "I wonder who is that unfortunate soul?"
"Prerna ji." I announced and this time the bomb worked. All of their heads snapped toward me with jet speed.
"Sarthak." Dad said firmly, before briefly glancing at Bhabhi. "This isn't something to joke about."
"I'm not joking. You guys are the ones laughing at something so serious." I adapted my alarming demeanour. The tone, no one took lightly.
"I am very serious. I like Prerna ji since a long time but before I could sincerely confess my feelings to her, she annouced her wedding plans with Ashish."
I spoke and no one dared to interrupt me. Mixed emotions were embarked on their features. They did not seem to believe me but they had to.
"Seeing her yesterday, in the hospital, I couldn't stop myself and confessed." I lied with conviction. They will definitely buy it. It's not like they have another option. "I put up a marriage proposal and she agreed."
