Sitting in the office space that was once a second home, now turns the dull ach in my chest to agonizing pain. This place use to have so much life in it. The walls are the same color, and the pictures are the same, it just feels hollow. The one that brought warmth and light has been gone for a month now.My aunt Lisa has been the towns' go to party planner for the last twenty years. There was no one better. She held the most extravagant parties you have ever seen. Her parties were a living Pinterest board. To say I had big shoes to fill would be an understatement. Even though I've been her assistant for years now. It was going to take everything in me to do the job on my own, and I don't want her faith in me to go to waste.
When I thought about taking over Lisa's business it was because she retired and was taking up a new hobby like knitting or gardening. Sadly, things don't always turn out the way we hope.
She was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer six months ago. One minute she was living out her dreams, then she found a lump and it all went downhill fast. Those six months were hard on all of us. Lisa played such an important role in our lives; her not being here left a hole in all of our hearts.Especially mine.
We were hardly ever apart between helping with doctors' appointments and finishing my training to take over. We might as well have been glued at the hip. As much as we all missed her, the relief we all feel that she isn't in pain anymore makes things a little easier.
By the end it was getting hard to watch. You could only see her pain shining in her blue eyes behind the mask she had in place. Hiding how she really felt. We all knew she was holding back for our sake. That was just the type of person she was. She was always smiling, all she ever wanted was to make the people around her happy.I think the quality of her work was the reason she had so many repeat clients. She really listened to them and did everything she could to make things happen.
My dad says I get my bubbly personality from her, but my kind heart is from my mom. She passed away when I was a young girl. I really don't remember a lot, but I do remember her bright smile and how it would bring light to the darkest corners of the earth. Making it impossible not to smile back. After she passed Lisa helped our dad raise me and my sisters. My older sister Christy is a mom herself. She has two adorable little kids, Mason and Amelia. She is one of the hardest working people I know. Then my little sister Katherine or Kat as we all call her is working on getting her cosmetology license. Kat is one of those people that looks like she wants to stab you but when you get to know her. She will make you laugh so hard you can't breathe. Leaving me in the middle. Were both of my sisters are quite and slow to warm up, I'm the complete opposite. I can talk a lot and don't really know a stranger.
Lisa said that I had the perfect personality for an event planner. Honestly watching how she did it so effortlessly. Made me want to do the same. So, when I turned eighteen, I started working for her. Learning everything, I could. Knowing I will have to do things on my own one day. Now that it was happening, I can't help but worry that I won't be able to live up to her legacy.
I have my first solo meeting today with a bride whose wedding is in six months. Thankfully we already had a basic idea on what the couple Alex and Kayla wanted. So, I wasn't going in to this completely blind. The main items we need to cover today are finalizing the menu and set them up an appointment with her preferred baker for a taste test. That should be easy enough.
I'm sitting behind my desk scrolling through the files my aunt had on them. I want to make sure I knew all the information we already had on their dream wedding. The theme is rustic but still feeling classy. She wanted a lot of burlap and wildflowers. With navy blue and cream as her colors. We booked a barn venue that had open floor space perfect for her ceremony. My favorite part was the outdoor patio area we plan on having her reception at. It had twinkling lights hanging from the barns roof to a few out post giving the area a soft romantic glow.
