After last night in the store, I wasn't expecting to see Kacey again until the wedding. When I walked into my parents' house and seen she was sitting there listening to Kayla ramble, I was more than surprised. For her to be in my parent's house means her and Kayla are closer than I thought. Or she is just here to make more money.
I can tell she is trying not to look at me but when she does it feels like she is trying to figure me out. Shaking off the unnerving feeling I answer my mom, while giving her an extra squeeze.
"I was bored at the house, so I figured I'd come hang out with you and dad. What's going on here?"
I walked past Kacey making my way to the fridge. I haven't been that close to her since we rode in the tow truck. I didn't like the way my body reacted to her sweet scent then, and I don't like it now. Doing my best to ignore it I give Kayla a rough rub on the head.
"We are working on wedding stuff. Want to help?"
Yeah, there is no way that is happening. "No. Why would I help when she is being paid to do it?" I said while pointing at Kacey. Turning to look at my mom, I quickly regret my words. She shakes her head as she uses her mom voice. "She has a name and its Kacey. I raised you better than to point fingers and not call people by name."
I hate when she uses that voice it makes me feel like a little kid again. I know she doesn't like the way I acted around Kacey. She thinks I'm going to give her the wrong impression. As per usual she is very vocal about her opinion too. Honestly, I try to stay as indifferent as possible around her. Having Kacey's attention makes me feel vulnerable and that's a feeling I really don't like. So, the best plan of action is to avoid her. But mom is right I'm being rude.
"I'm sorry, Kacey." I say looking into her hazel eyes. She half smiles but I notice she has a look of almost hurt run across her face. But it's gone as fast as it came.
"For your information little bro, Kacey isn't on the clock. Mom and I were going to put these labels on and feel the bird seed bags by ourselves. Once we finished the invitations, she offered to help. These aren't things the event planner does. She is just being nice." She isn't on the clock. She is just helping because she wants to. I guess that is nice of her.
I left them to finish their little project to find dad. He is right where I thought he would be, in the living room sitting in his usually spot watching TV. I take a seat on the couch with a big sigh which catches his attention.
"Hey Bub, what brings you by?"
"Just come to hang out. I see you are staying out of the kitchen."
"Yeah, I'm not getting caught up in all that stuff. Your mom and sister were so happy when Kacey offered to help. Brittany was supposed to help but I guess she canceled last minute." Of course she canceled, she hasn't helped with anything. Isn't that what maids of honor are supposed to do?
"Why did she cancel?"
"I'm not sure. Kayla said she couldn't get an answer from her. I don't know why she is still friends with that girl. Especially after what she did to you." He said shaking his head. Sometimes it bothers me they were still friends but then I think it's Kayla decision who to hang out with, so I stay out of it.
"That's why me and your mom are so happy her and Kacey hit it off so well. She needs a genuine friend." He doesn't say anything after that and turns back to his show. I do agree with him Kayla needs better friends. If Kacey is the girl, she seems to be then I hope they keep in touch after the wedding.
