Sitting at Roses' kitchen island with Kayla, I can't get over how beautiful their house is. It's a simple ranch style. She has it decorated with warm and inviting color. My favorite part is her kitchen with a gingerbread theme all year around.
We are working on putting the wedding invitations together. I thought things was going to be awkward going to a client's house, but I'm really enjoying myself. Rose made us an amazing lunch, homemade chicken and gnocchi soup.
Normally it takes a couple hours to finish invites but we have a pretty good assembly line going. I stuff and seal the envelopes, then Kayla writes the names and addresses. Rose is mainly keeping us company and marking people off the list. She is also telling me more stories. You can tell the four of them are very close, it warms my heart listening to her.
We finished up the last of the invitations, while Rose started gathering the supplies to put the labels on the wedding favors. Kayla had the best idea to get personalized small bags of coffee that say, "Alex and Kayla the perfect blend."
"Kayla, where is Brittany? I thought she was going to help us with this part." Rose says as she lays everything out.
"I don't know she isn't texting back. My guess is something with work came up." I can hear the hurt in her voice. Even if she is busy, she could at least let them know. "I can help if you don't mind." I didn't want to be pushy, but I really didn't mind helping. "Off the clock, you know as a friend." They both smiles "that would be great thank you" then we got back to work.
All we will have left is to fill small bags of bird seed, to toss in the air for their send off at the end of the reception.
We are about halfway through when the youngest Reed walks through the back door. I try not to get caught this time checking him out by not looking. But my treacherous eyes had other plans. The man hasn't said anything or even looked at me and my face is already heating up. I really need to get a grip.
A few days ago, Kayla asked me what I thought of her brother. Knowing that I couldn't lie to save my life. I decided to just be honest. I told her, I find him interesting. I felt like I might have crossed a line, but before I could correct myself. She started clapping her hands and told me to give it time. I really didn't know what she was hinting to since it was obvious he disliked me. I just put it in the back of my mind. Until this very moment watching him walk to his mom.
Rose got out of her seat to greet her son. "Hey Bub, what are you doing here?" Hugging her back he looks around the room taking note of the wedding bomb that went off in here. Finally locking eyes with me, he dropped his usual mask. Making it impossible to read him. He was definitely surprised to see me by his body langue, but he doesn't look as comfortable as he was when he first walked in. Maybe I was reading too much into the silence.
"I was bored at the house, so I figured I'd come hang out with you and dad. What's going on here?" Stepping away from his mom he made his way to the fridge but not before stopping to roughly rub his knuckles on top of Kayla's head. She pushed him off and said "we are working on wedding stuff. Want to help?"
He grabs a drink then looks at his sister with an arched eyebrow. "No. Why would I help when she is being paid to do it?" He said pointing a finger at me. My shoulders instantly tens up. Okay that was uncalled for. I mean I was invited.
I look to Rose to ask if I need to leave when I see her face, I hold my tongue. If looks could kill Trent would be six feet under with the one, he is getting. "She has a name and its Kacey. I raised you better than to point fingers and not call people by name." Rose says in a voice anyone would recognize as a woman about to smack her kid. I watch Trent trying to gage is reaction, he looks at me and says "I'm sorry, Kacey" half smiling I nodded my head in acknowledgment. I really didn't want to get in the middle of this, so I made myself busy with the rest of the bird seed.
