Marleen thought that maybe after fighting an interdimensional monster everything would've come back to normal. And it did, at least for a year.
Then another monster decided to take a liking...

chapter fifteen, a coded message.
MARLEEN HAD JUST finished her shift in the store and was on her way to the mall. Mr. Jefferson had finally laid her off, which Marleen was not surprised by. She thanked the man and agreed that Marleen would help him occasionally. She'd never confess it, but Mr. Jefferson was like a paternal figure to her. She owed him.
The walk to the mall was quick but hot. The cool air of the mall was a breath of fresh air, pun not intended, and Marleen went straight to Scoops Ahoy. Uninterested in the galore of shops.
"Hello, losers." Marleen greeted them, sliding immediately behind the bar and next to Steve, Robin leaning on the window's sill from the backroom.
"Weren't you working?" Steve asked.
"Got laid off."
Robin raised an eyebrow. "You look waaay too happy for those news."
"It's okay. I expected it." Marleen answered. "It's cool. He told me I can get popcorn discounts for our movie nights." Marleen grinned at Steve.
Robin's eyebrows raised even more.
"Oh, yeah, that's cool! The kids will totally like that!" Steve mumbled.
Without Marleen noticing, Robin added a tally to the YOU SUCK row. Steve stealthily gave Robin the finger.
Ever since Steve started working at Scoops Ahoy with Robin, the girl had caught on to Steve's... infatuation with the blonde girl-even if Steve vehemently denied it-and, in true Robin fashion, she started the 'you rule, you suck' board every time Steve was overly pathetic or cool towards Marleen. There wasn't any single tally to the YOU RULE row.
"What's your poison today?" Steve then asked Marleen, already grabbing his ice cream scooper as a sword.
Marleen smiled. "Hmm..." She rubbed her chin in thought as she looked at the ice creams. "Let's try a scoop of the USS Butterscotch, Sailor."
Steve scoffed as he scooped one perfect ball of butterscotch in one cup and two scoops of vanilla bean in another. "Here you go, ma'am." He then turned to Robin. "I'm taking a break." Robin opened her mouth to complain. "I let you have two breaks last week without any bitching. You owe me."
Robin grumbled. "You definitely complained, you manipulative dingus."
Steve ignored her. Going straight to the break room. Marleen smiled at Robin and tipped her one dollar in thanks.
Inside the break room, Steve sat on the table while Marleen stood up, leaning on the table in front of Steve. The blonde took a bite of her ice cream.
