chapter sixteen,
decode a message.

THE GROUP HAD stayed the whole evening trying to decode the message. It was difficult, translating a code from a language they knew nothing about but if anyone could do it, it was Dustin's and Steve's stubbornness.

The whiteboard, which previously had a tally of how many times Steve had sucked, had been wiped off before Marleen could ask any questions. Now, it had the whole Russian alphabet written in it.

With Dustin and Marleen sitting at the table, the book and recorder on top of it, and Steve pacing around, eating a banana; they listened to the tape for the Nth time.

The message that Dustin recorded consisted of a couple of Russian sentences, with cheery music in the background. If Marleen was being honest, the said music was distracting her from the unknown words.

Dustin paused the tape. "So what do you think?" He asked the teens.

"No clue." Marleen sighed, brushing her hair off of her face in frustration.

"It sounded familiar," Steve said, finishing the fruit.

Dustin, and Marleen, frowned.

"What?"

"The music," Steve mumbled, mouth full. "The music right there at the end."

"Please don't talk with your mouth full." Marleen whispered, disgusted. The brunet looked at her and smirked, flipping her off.

Dustin, fed up, yelled. "Why are you listening to the music, Steve?" He abruptly turned towards Marleen. "Why is he listening to the music?" Marleen shrugged. Dustin continued towards Steve: "Listen to the Russian! We're translating Russian!"

"I'm trying to listen to the Russian, but there's music—"

Steve was abruptly cut off by the door opening violently. Marleen jumped at the sudden intrusion, startled for a second before realizing it was just Robin.

"All right, babysitting time is over. You need to get in there." Robin yelled, annoyed, and stomped inside. As she entered the break room, she saw her board replaced with the alphabet. "Hey, my board. That was important data, shitbirds."

"I doubt it." Marleen quipped. "Now again, counting how many times Steve is a dumbass can be important, too."

"Hey!" Steve whined.

"I guarantee you, what we're doing is way more important than your data." Dustin answered, ignoring the teens next to him.

"Yeah?" Robin asked, moving closer to the table, brows raised, smirking. "And how do you know these Russians are up to no good anyways?"

The trio froze. They shared hurried looks.

Dustin whispered. "How does she know about the Russians?"

Steve whispered. "I don't know."
