chapter eighteen,
conversations.

MARLEEN COULDN'T BELIEVE that she got up early for this. The group had split; Robin and Steve stayed down in the shop while Marleen and Dustin went up to the rooftop to keep an eye on the delivery bay.

"You know..." Dustin started. "What do you think about what we talked yesterday?"

Marleen sighed, restraining herself not to groan. Not this topic again. She barely slept last night, his dreams plagued with Robin and Steve together.

"I really, really don't wanna talk about it, Dustin."

Dustin, behind his binoculars, grinned. "Why? Because you like Steve?"

"It doesn't matter. He likes Robin, end of discussion."

"What? No!" Dustin yelped. "No, you need to win him back."

Marleen frowned. "Win him back? I never had him, Dustin." She scoffed. "And I'm not gonna fight with Robin for Steve. I like her... She's my friend."

Dustin shook his head. "But you need to win!"

His insistence was suspicious to Marleen. If he had been so positive about Robin and Steve being a couple, why was he now plotting against them? Sometimes she didn't know what went through this kid's head.

"Weren't you the one trying to set them up?" Marleen asked. "Why are you telling me this?"

"I–" Dustin hesitated. "I was..."

"The truth, Dustin."

"I was trying to make you jealous on behalf of Steve, so you two would get together," Dustin revealed.

Marleen sighed, rubbing her face in frustration. "Ugh, Dustin..."

"I'm sorry! But you need to know that Steve doesn't like Robin! I swear!"

But Marleen didn't believe him. "Have you seen them?" She asked. "They already look like a couple."

"Marleen–" Dustin began saying.

"Sorry, Dustin." Marleen got up. "I need to be alone for a bit."

She left.

Back in Scoops Ahoy, Dustin let them know what he had found. The room the Russians were guarding was full of boxes, but for it to be that guarded... there had to be something important.

"That keycard opens the door, but unfortunately, the Russian with this keycard also has a massive gun." Dustin was telling them, pacing back and forth; Steve and Robin sitting at each end of the table while Marleen stood next to the door and behind Dustin, looking. "Whatever's in this room, whatever's in those boxes, they really don't want anybody finding it."
