Lizzie's POV
"How did we go from gardening to a water fight?" I laugh. "When you asked me to get the basket I saw the water guns by the baskets so I thought it would be funny." He says. "It was and also a little refreshing." I say before pulling him into a kiss and head down to meet our friends in the kitchen. "Why does Scarlett have clothes here if she's just going to wear yours?" I ask Louri when I see Scarlett wearing one of Louri's USMC shirts. "The jeans are mine." Scar defends. "Plus we're married, what's hers is mine and vice versa." She adds and Louri just nods. "Louri what happened to your arm?" I ask, seeing a red mark on her arm as I turn on the stove so I can put the kettle on to make some tea. "Shanna doesn't do mornings well." Louri chuckles. "She wasn't happy when Louri woke her to let her know we were heading out." Scarlett says, trying not to laugh. "She's a lot like Chris then huh?" I laugh softly. "Oh yeah I'm the only one of us who tolerates mornings." Louri laughs. "Yeah that's because I've seen you chug a monster at five in the morning." Scarlett says. "Yeah well someone hid my energy drinks." Louri pouts. "I knew this would come up, hold on." Scarlett says and heads to the guest room where I assume she put her bag. "No chugging, drink it like a normal person, you energy drink junkie." Scarlett says coming out with a monster. "Ok no chugging." Louri says as she opens the can. She lets out a satisfied sigh after she takes a sip. "Do you just keep an energy drink with you?" Louri asks. "Yes, because I know you love your energy drinks." Scarlett says. "Louri you have a problem." I laugh. "I don't see the problem." Robbie says pulling a redbull out of the fridge. "We married caffeine junkies." Scarlett laughs and I nod as I laugh with her. "Says the woman I have caught staring at the coffee maker saying and I quote 'Brew faster damn it, I need coffee asshole.'" Louri says. "I didn't know you saw that." Scarlett says. "Yes dear I did, more than once." Louri says. "I need something to help me wake up in the morning too but I don't have to chug an energy drink." Scarlett says as I make her and I a cup of tea. "I know Baby, it's just fun to mess with you." Louri says kissing Scar's temple. "Here you go Scar." I say passing her a cup of tea. "Thank you, do you want help in the garden?" She asks. "Yeah I would love that. I know these two like to hang out. Robbie and I got distracted and I never finished tending the garden." I say and she nods and we take our tea and go out to the garden.
Louri's POV
"Does she really hide your energy drinks?" Robbie asks. "Just one time after my car accident, I wasn't really supposed to consume that much caffeine." I explain. "Ah, I did put my red bulls on a higher shelf in the fridge after that time Devon tried to drink one." Robbie says, opening the fridge showing me that the Red Bull is on the top shelf. "That must have gotten your heart rate up seeing him with a red bull." I say. "Oh definitely, I mean this with all due respect but your wife can be scary at times." He says, making me laugh. "I could say the same thing about Lizzie. I'm a Marine and her head tilt terrifies me." I say and now he is laughing. I've missed this. Robbie and I used to hang out more. He's my best friend outside of the military. "Want to have a jam session and serenade our wives?" He asks. "Hell yeah I'll grab my guitar. I brought it with me since I thought we might end up playing." I tell him and he smiles. "Well I've got to get mine from the music room, meet you on the patio?" He asks. "Sounds like a plan." I say and we head our separate ways to get our guitars. "Ok what do you think we should play first?" I ask when Robbie and I meet up in the kitchen. "I was thinking Fast Car by Tracy Chapman since we both know it and it's a classic." He says. "Agreed, let's go and serenade our wives." I say making him nod and we head out to the patio and we can see Scarlett is following Lizzie with a basket as they chat and Lizzie every once in a while will put something in the basket.
Scarlett's POV
"Wow Lizzie, your garden is doing great." I compliment, which makes her smile widely. "Thank you, I am very proud." She says. "Oh my god Liz look." I point to the house where our spouses are sitting on the patio. "Ready?" Louri asks Robbie and he nods and they begin to play Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. "You got a fast car. And I want a ticket to anywhere. Maybe we make a deal. Maybe together we can get somewhere. Any place is better. Starting from zero, got nothing to lose. Maybe we'll make something. Me, myself, I got nothing to prove. You got a fast car." Louri and Robbie sing harmonizing effortlessly.
"I got a plan to get us out of here. I've been working at the convenience store. Managed to save just a little bit of money. Won't have to drive too far. Just across the border and into the city. You and I can both get jobs. Finally, see what it means to be living."
"See, my old man's got a problem. He live with the bottle, that's the way it is. He says his body's too old for working. His body's too young to look like his. Mama went off and left him. She wanted more from life than he could give. I said, "Somebody's got to take care of him". So, I quit school and that's what I did."
"You got a fast car. Is it fast enough so we can fly away? Still gotta make a decision. Leave tonight, or live and die this way."
"So, I remember when we were driving, driving in your car. Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk. City lights lay out before us. And your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder. And I, I, I had a feeling that I belonged. I, I, I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone. You got a fast car. We go cruising, entertain ourselves."
"You still ain't got a job. So I work in a market as a checkout girl. I know things will get better. You'll find work and I'll get promoted. We'll move out of the shelter. Buy a bigger house, live in the suburbs."
You got a fast car."
"I got a job that pays all our bills. You stay out drinking late at the bar. See more of your friends than you do of your kids. I'd always hoped for better. Thought maybe together you and me would find it."
"I got no plans, I ain't going nowhere. Take your fast car and keep on driving. So, I remember when we were driving, driving in your car. Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk. City lights lay out before us. And your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder. And I, I, I had a feeling that I belonged. I, I, I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone. You got a fast car. Is it fast enough, so you can fly away? You still gotta make a decision. Leave tonight, or live and die this way."
