Chapter #59

May 23rd 2022

Devon’s POV

I guess I fell asleep during the movie because I wake up to Mama running her hand through my hair as my head was now in her lap. “See, even the kids notice it, Louri.” I hear my Auntie Shanna say. “I don’t even realize I’m doing it.” Mama says quietly. “It’s cute, it just shows how much love you have for them with just one look.” Auntie Shanna says. “It’s true Hun, when you give me that smile it reminds me how much you love me. And when I see you smile at the kids the way you do, I never have to worry about them ever questioning your love for them.” Mommy says and it’s true. “I hope I never have done anything to make them question if I love them. I know sometimes I’m not the best at showing my emotions and part of that is years of being in the military where you kinda have to be closed off.” Mama says. “I know you love us Mama.” I say as I sit up in her lap and she wraps her arms around me. “Mama you are squeezing me.” I giggle. “I just really love you so so much.” She says. “I know Mama but you don’t have to squeeze me.” I laugh as she loosens her grip a bit. “Are you going to go see Uncle Tom today?” I ask and Mama’s smile drops a little.

Louri’s POV

Fuck, it’s May 23rd. “Uh yeah I am.” I tell him. “Can I come? I miss him.” He asks and I look at Scarlett and she nods. “Yeah we can all go.” I tell him since I knew Scarlett was coming. “I'll put on something nice.” He says and runs upstairs to his room. “Fuck I forgot what day it was.” My voice cracks as I speak. “I’ve got to text the group and see who is coming.” I say pulling out my phone.

Sherman’s Idiots

Lt.Col. Evans: Who is coming today?

1Lt. Wilds: Grace and I

SSgt. O’Reily: Me as well.

Cpl. Klinger: I am.

LCpl. Kelly: I will be there.

Maj: Michaelson: I’ll be there.

Pfc. Mullins: My husband and I.

Col. Potter: Mildred and I.

Pvt. Beaton: I’m going

Lt.Col. Evans: My family is coming so be on your best behavior.

“We should start getting ready.” Scarlett tells me. “Yeah and it seems like the little man is up.” I say when I hear Thomas through the monitor.

Scarlett’s POV

“Here, wear this one; it's his favorite color.” I say as I put a pink tie around her neck and begin to do a windsor knot. “Thank you.” She says emotionless. “Stop. Don’t shut down, baby, it's not healthy.” I say as I work on her tie. “Sorry, I didn’t realize I was doing it. It’s a coping mechanism.” She sighs. “I know but you don’t have to shut down. I’ll be your strength when you are feeling weak just like you are for me.” I tell her as I finish her tie. “Have I ever told you how much I love you?” She leans down for a kiss. “Just every chance you get.” I say before connecting our lips and I can feel her grief from just a small kiss.

Louri’s POV

“Mama, where are we?” Maya asks when we pull up to the cemetery. “This is a cemetery hun. When someone passes away they are laid to rest in places like this. Today we are visiting your Uncle Tom. I’ve told you about him.” I tell her and she just nods her head. I mean how do you explain this to a child? We reach the section where Tom, Jessica, and Devon are buried. “We are the first ones here.” I comment. “Go. Before everyone gets here and you don’t get the chance.” Scarlett nods her head at Jessica’s grave which is just a few meters away. “Are you sure?” I ask. “Yes Louri go. Talk to her.” She says so I walk to Jessica’s grave and it has the Marine emblem on it and reads. [Master Sergeant Jessica North Henderson: Beloved daughter, sister, and partner. Proud Marine survived by her mother Sarah and brother Thomas Henderson and her Fiance Louri Evans.] “Hey Jess, it's been a long time. I don't know what to say. I am a Lieutenant Colonel now. I did what you told me to. I found someone like you wanted me to. I’m sorry I couldn’t save you. I'm so sorry. I um I have kids. My youngest is named after Tom. My wife Scarlett offered to name one of our girls after you but I felt that would be weird you know.” I say, kneeling down my hand on her gravestone. “You would love her, she's great. My eldest is named after Hendricks. It was actually Scarlett’s idea to name him Devon. I call him my little Marine. He even has Hendericks dog tags. It was her idea that I come talk to you actually. Semper Fi my love.” I say placing a kiss to my fingers then place them on her stone “Louri.” I hear my name called by someone I haven’t seen since Jessica’s funeral. She couldn’t make it to Tom's. “Mrs. Henderson.” I say. “You’ve matured dear.” She says, giving me a soft smile. “It’s been a while.” I chuckle. “That it has.” She says. “I feel horrible that I couldn’t make it for Tom’s funeral.” She says regretfully. “Hey you were in the hospital it’s not your fault you were sick.” I tell her. “I heard you got married a while ago and have kids.” She says. “I did and I do. That’s her over there with papa Sherman.” I tell  her. “You married the Black Widow.” She says shocked before I feel a little body crash into my legs. “Yeah and this is Louisa, one of our kids.” I say picking up my daughter. “She looks just like you.” She says. “Yes she does. Would you like to meet my wife and my other kids?” I ask. “I would love that dear.” She says I link my arm with hers like the gentlewoman I am and lead her to the group where everyone is.

A/N: Well that took a turn I didn’t expect. Anygays see you in the next one.
