I woke up to the sound of thunder rumbling through the sky. Today was the day of my flight back home, but as I looked out the window, I saw a fierce storm raging outside. Lightning flashed, and rain poured down in torrents. My first instinct was to check my phone for updates on my flight, which was scheduled to depart in six hours.
I quickly navigated to the airline's website and saw the dreaded notification: my flight was canceled. Panic started to set in as I checked the weather app and local news. "Sudden severe storm over South Korea," the headlines read. "All flights canceled. Avoid going outside due to hazardous conditions." Reports of accidents and injuries filled the screen, illustrating the unpreparedness of everyone for this unexpected weather event.
What am I supposed to do now? I needed to find a new flight, but there was no telling when I could leave. Moreover, I wasn't sure if I could stay in my current apartment longer than planned. Just then, a knock on my door broke through my anxious thoughts. It was my landlady.
She wanted to check on me because of the storm and the flight cancellations. "I'm sorry, but I can't let you stay here any longer," she said apologetically. "I need to prepare the apartment for the next tenants. However, you can stay here today while you find another place."
"At least that's something," I thought, thanking her for the temporary reprieve. I immediately pulled out my phone again to search for new accommodations. As I was scrolling through options, a message from Jake popped up.
"Hey Chloe, is everything alright? Your flight got canceled because of the storm, right? What are you going to do now? Can you stay in your apartment, or do you need to find a new place?"
I responded to him right away, explaining my situation. "Hey Jake, yeah, my flight was canceled, and the landlady said I can't stay here longer than today. I'm looking for another place to stay right now. It's pretty chaotic."
A few moments later, my phone buzzed with another message from Jake. "That sounds really stressful. Don't worry, we'll figure something out. Can you hold on for a bit? I'll see if I can help."
I felt a bit of relief wash over me, knowing I wasn't alone in this. While waiting for Jake to respond, I continued searching for hotels or short-term rentals, but everything seemed either fully booked or too expensive.
Not long after, another message came through. "Hey Chloe, I talked to the guys, and we agreed you can stay with one of us until the flights are back to normal. Would that work for you?"
I was touched by their generosity and quickly replied, "Are you sure? I don't want to impose or cause any trouble."
Jake's response was immediate and reassuring. "Of course, we're sure. It's no trouble at all. We want to make sure you're safe and comfortable. I'll come by in a bit to help you with your stuff."
Grateful and relieved, I started packing my essentials. The storm outside continued to rage, but inside, I felt a little more secure knowing I had friends looking out for me. True to his word, Jake arrived shortly, his presence a comforting reminder that I wasn't facing this chaos alone.
I was still a bit nervous, though, because I hadn't met all the members in person. I only knew Jake, Heeseung, Jungwon and Ni-ki. But they had been so kind and I tried to stay calm and focus on feeling grateful for what they were doing. It wasn't common to be welcomed into the private lives of idols. It felt strange, very much so, but also exciting.
As we left my apartment, Jake noticed my apprehension and gave me a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, you'll fit right in. The guys are really looking forward to having you stay with us."
