There was absolutely no way that Phantom could forget the meeting that morning. But as Mina stepped outside her bedroom door, there was no sight of him anywhere. Which was extremely unusual as it seemed like he practically camped out there since their introduction. Hence why Mina was waiting outside the ghoul den that early morning. It was dreadfully quiet except for the tapping of her foot against the marble. And time seemed to be approaching fast to when they needed to be in the library to meet Father DeFroque.
Mina rarely felt disappointed once joining the ministry those many years ago. And she really tried to tell herself that it wasn't a big deal that he wasn't there. Phantom didn't owe her anything especially after essentially pushing him away. It was incredibly stupid to keep believing that he would stick around.
Father DeFroque was waiting with a gleam in his eye as she somberly strolled inside the library. It almost felt like he was mocking her, like he knew something she didn't know and she loathed it. He had took it upon himself to pile up a multitude of books that Mina didn't recognize.
"Where's your little lapdog?" Father DeFroque smirked. He was genuinely surprised how easy it was to execute his plan to get Mina alone. There was no doubt that her guard dog would follow closely behind her so he had to make arrangements. If he was correct, Phantom would be stuck with the other ghouls practicing for a ritual that wasn't happening. Of course, he made it sound extremely urgent to Sister Imperator; it was painfully too easy.
"He's not my lapdog. Phantom was just busy is all." Mina tried to brush it off but it was definitely bothering her. It was becoming increasing harder to deny that Phantom meant a lot more to her than just someone to train. She could feel the tickle coming back up her throat. How could she forget to take some medicine that morning to combat a possible cold?
"Oh I bet. Those sisters of sin are very hard to satisfy, aren't they?" Father DeFroque planted the seed of doubt waiting for it to sprout. He enjoyed watching as Mina sank further into her seat, the sadness washing over her face. An uncomfortable feeling settled in the pit of her stomach at the thought of him being wrapped up with some clergy member.
"He probably had rehearsals to go to and forgot to tell me." Mina didn't know who she was trying to convince but it wasn't working. Father DeFroque chuckled while fluttering through the pages of an incantation book. One he was very familiar with that he was hoping Mina could assist him with.
"You have to understand something, Sister. Humans mean nothing to a ghoul, our lives are fleeting. I'm sorry to say it but why would he waste time on you?" Father DeFroque's words felt like they were stabbing her in the heart. It killed her knowing that this was exactly why she tried to push him away in the first place.
"I'm just here to teach him, that's all." Mina reminded herself. Father DeFroque curiously watched as she sniffled before suffering another coughing fit. "I'm sorry, I think I might be getting sick." Of course the day grew worse as the minutes ticked by.
