Sehki blinked, barely rising from slumber to a bright room.
"Just rest."
"Wali? How," yawning, "are you here?"
"I asked Calypsa the same thing. Looks like I'm giving you another bedtime story."
—
Four months ago
Wali's body floated in an opaque sea, he was this close to drowning into, hearing the voice of his protege.
"Calypsa," coughing, "Sehki? Is that you?"
"Your mind's been succumbed to the Void transformation. It'll take some time, but I'll get you out."
She disconnected her hair from Wali's weak responsiveness, heading over to four different jailed facilities of four familiar individuals: molding, eating, meditating, and slumping food until spotting her arrival.
"Hey, good to see you all so soon."
Ainsley, Taylor, and Rigal all went towards the barriers separating her from them while Xia just lifted her head so soon.
"We were worried to death for you. Don't ever trick us like that ever again!"
"No promises," dropping her calm demeanor. "Why didn't any of you fess up about talking to Cluster? If you all told me when I asked, you could've testified against him without ending up in this situation!"
Ainsley was the only one with the courage to apologize for their guilt. "Sorry, I should've talked us out of it."
"But we're innocent, Sehki survived! And Lumin's the one who turned me into a Void, I'm the most innocent one here! I demand justice!"
She sighed. "Attempted murder of a public heir is still a crime: diplomatic immunity doesn't apply against a global threat. Even my role as a spy doesn't grant me full control. They're also accounting for your actions against all those movie stars."
That shut Taylor up, while Xia had one thing to ask her.
"Did you sabotage me during the race?"
"Hmm: yes. But it wouldn't have changed much. Sehki would've beaten you either way. Cree would've let himself get hit by the lightning and throw him to the finish line. It'd still be close but he would've used any shadow to get the drop on you at the last second."
"Oh," disappointed, when Calypsa bent down to match her face.
"But that loss made you stronger. In fact, one day you're going to surpass your parents and Mako. If," caressing the wall between her hair, "you're willing to rise from the ashes."
Taylor raised a hand. "Still, you just let him beat us up as revenge?"
"That's not it, Tay," said Ainsley, stepping in. "It was to help him grow and evolve, because we stayed stagnant."
"But we got nothing out of that: he took our members, our baes, and our pride."
"Oh Taylor," giving him a haughty laugh, tapping her fingers to him, "your action movies and my romance stories you look down on have one thing in common: the hero always needs a good rival to challenge them and grow with. In the good ones anyway."
"In darkest times, that's where you'll find your greatest strength," Rigal.
Xia shrugged. "You told him about our secrets though?"
"I told him mine," Ainsley admitted. "But he probably figured out the rest on his own or through everyone else. Though if he didn't, I'm sure you would've given him hints, wouldn't you?"
"Perhaps," giggling. "The tickets to the behind the scenes for Victory Rider was a lucky break, though he'd probably show up to your show. Shame he thought you were the meanest, Xia," laughing. "Never thought the order would be based on how you treated a dog."
The moment Taylor and Rigal remembered that, they slumped down in shame.
"I was picked second?"
"Is my lack of kindness un-alpha?"
Ainsley almost let out a chuckle, but Xia wasn't having it.
"You knew about all of that going on, so why didn't you stop us yourself? Did you only care about Sehki this whole time?"
Calypsa frowned, visibly punching the wall with just her gaze, letting the anger wash into regret, telling them the things she told him after hanging up on them.
"I only had you all to take me in and I had to beg your parents to let me be a part of your lives: going from country to country, finding out the training they put you through: I helped give you all a break from that, but I had to keep my distance."
Ainsley reached her. "Cuz we were too caught up in blaming Sehki, and when we all found things to do, you had to make our parents think you were done with the Shakuhelds."
"I tried moving on too," hanging her head in shame. "But it only got worse when I found out: clones, targeting actors, your friend that hated the girls I tried to befriend, and your dad doing anything to smear my host family's name: I had enough."
"Wait, that rumor you stripped, tied him up and threw down the dam: that was true?"
"Rigal, I take love too seriously to let someone like that replace the love in my life: and using any of you as a rebound wasn't worth it. Sorry Xia."
"- I didn't know that happened. That's why you bonded with Vena so much?"
"Well when everyone wants you all, your closest female friend becomes their competition. And some of them stood back and watched. Meanwhile Vena and Vital just wanted a friend."
Taylor was still confused. "Were you really in love with Sehki the whole time?"
She blushed, finally breaking down that wall.
"Obviously," tenderly smiling with tears in my eyes. "Making my friends fighting each other, trying to prevent Wali from getting exploited, our dream for us to be in the Mightatholon to be a reality....I'm sorry for being selfish."
They gave her time to cry before asking her about Wali.
"His sanity is breaking down, so for your first step of rehabilitation, we're going to pump our memories of him to wake up. It'll take some time, but Sehki will need all the help he can get."
