John's POV
John walked briskly down the street, hands shoved deep in his pockets to guard against the winter chill. He had just finished his late shift at the factory and was eager to get home to his warm apartment. John was a solitary man, not by choice but by circumstance. He had lost his wife in a car accident five years ago and had thrown himself into work ever since.
As he passed an alleyway, something caught his eye—a small, shivering figure huddled against the wall. John's heart ached at the sight. He had always had a soft spot for kids, having once dreamed of a house full of them. But life had other plans.
He hesitated, knowing that intervening would complicate his life. But he couldn't just walk away. He took a deep breath and approached the boy cautiously.
"Hey there, buddy. Are you okay?"
The boy looked up, his wide eyes meeting John's concerned gaze. He didn't answer, his small body trembling with fear.
John knelt down to the boy's level. "My name is John. I won't hurt you. Are you lost?"
The boy shook his head slowly. He wasn't lost; he just had nowhere to go. John's eyes softened, and he held out his hand.
"Come with me. I can give you a warm place to stay and some food. You look hungry."
The boy hesitated, glancing at his teddy bear as if seeking its advice. After a moment, he reached out with a trembling hand and took John's.
