Tommy's POV

Tommy heard footsteps and shrank further into the shadows. He held his breath, hoping whoever it was would just go away. But the footsteps stopped, and a soft voice broke the silence.

"Hey there, buddy. Are you okay?"

Tommy looked up, his wide eyes meeting the concerned gaze of a tall man. He didn't answer, his small body trembling with fear.

The man knelt down to Tommy's level. "My name is John. I won't hurt you. Are you lost?"

Tommy shook his head slowly. He wasn't lost; he just had nowhere to go. John's eyes softened, and he held out his hand.

"Come with me. I can give you a warm place to stay and some food. You look hungry."

Tommy hesitated, glancing at his teddy bear as if seeking its advice. After a moment, he reached out with a trembling hand and took John's.

As they walked together, Tommy couldn't help but glance up at the man beside him. John seemed kind, but Tommy had learned not to trust too easily. They reached a car, and John opened the passenger door, helping Tommy in. The car was warm, a stark contrast to the biting cold outside.

On the drive home, John tried to make small talk, but Tommy remained silent, eyes wide and wary. John sighed inwardly, understanding that trust wouldn't come easily. When they arrived at John's apartment, he showed Tommy around.

"This is your room," John said, opening the door to a small but cozy guest room. "You can sleep here."

Tommy nodded, still clutching his bear. John's heart ached for the boy's fear and vulnerability. "I'll make us some dinner, okay?"

Tommy nodded again, and John left the room, giving him space. As he prepared a simple meal, he couldn't help but think of his wife and the family they never had. Maybe, just maybe, this was a chance to make a difference.
