Far Away (Original Song #16)

While I was cleaning my room the other day, I found a bunch of old partially written songs. One of them was a chorus that my friend and I wrote sometime last year. I don't remember what our intention of writing it was but as I found it, it kind of reminded me of my grandfather who passed away at the beginning of 2013. I wanted to write a song for him for a really long time but I couldn't quite get it right. So now two years later, I finally have something to dedicate to my grandfather. I know he is up in heaven somewhere and I can't wait until the day I get to see him again.

This song was inspired by the memories I have of my grandpa. He lived a couple hours away so I didn't get to see him very often, but I cherish all the memories I have of him.

Verse:
I'm holding on to the pictures that you left me
Pain is fading, but I'm clinging to your memory
Time is up on the words we didn't say
And I wonder, tell me why'd you have to go away?

Prechorus:
I think of those times
Those Christmas nights
We sat on those steps
And you read us a story
Oh, I would love
To hear your voice again

Chorus:
There's a ghost here and it's got your name
I told myself that I would be okay
But time is making you slip away
I've never felt so far away

A million miles and a thousand years
That's how it feels when you're not here
Even though we'll meet again someday
I've never felt so far away

Verse:
I think back to that house from years ago
With a warm smile and open arms, we'd always be welcomed home
In the closet in the hallway you kept a little wooden toy train
When I think of you, I think of that, too, one of my fondest memories, yeah

Prechorus:
The hardest days
Those last few years
Every time we'd visit
I'd shed a tear
You were lying in
That prison of a chair
You could hardly speak
Oh, I missed you

Chorus:
There's a ghost here and it's got your name
I told myself that I would be okay
But time is making you slip away
I've never felt so far away

A million miles and a thousand year
That's how it feels when you're not here
Even though we'll meet again someday
I've never felt so far away

Away, away, away
Away, away from you
Away, away, away

Sometimes I think of you and cry
Other times I smile up at the sky
'Cause I know you're up there
Somewhere out there
And now you can sing and dance
Now you can run and jump and do all the things
You couldn't do here anymore

Away, away, away
Away, away from you
Away, away away
It's been awhile but I'll always

Outro:
Hold on to the pictures that you left me
Keep on clinging to the best memories
I'll smile 'cause I know you're love will always stay
Soon we won't be far away

We really aren't that far away
Soon we won't be far away
