"So where do you want me?" Dusty Jefferson sat up in the tractor seat.
"Well, you can start with digging a hole for that carcass in the field, but we really probably need you at the grave yard. The Pigs have dug up the most recent grave and spread it around. I warn you, it's pretty nasty. It's probably best to work up to it, or let me do it."
I told him.
"The most recent grave, would that be old Henderson himself?" Jefferson had a dangerous glint in his eye.I nodded,
"Yep, that would be him."
"Well, that's where I'm starting. I've waited a long time to bury that fucker. I'm not passing up this chance." Jefferson started up his tractor.
"Point the way, Boy!" He yelled over the noise. I waved in the general direction, stunned with the additional information dumped on me.Jefferson jerked into motion and headed off to the graveyard. I headed to the house to check on Rachel. She was sleeping again. Her breaths were soft and even. I checked the water levels and noticed she'd been drinking. Something eased in me, although my head throbbed.
I pulled out a kitchen chair and sat down. She had two brothers, and a nephew if what Jefferson said was correct. No way I way letting Blaze near her though. Shaquille said he'd changed, but I'm not buying it. I'd joined the club after the nonsense with Dylan had been sorted out, and never met Dylan's Mom. But I'd heard the story. I still don't know how Midwife restrained himself from punching in Blaze's head every time he saw him.
I watched Rachel twitch in her sleep. I hoped she was having good dreams, because it sounded like her life had been hell. My hopes were dashed when she started jerking.
"No, Pa, no... no, Pa, don't!" She jerked herself awake and screamed.
"Let me go let me go let me go!"I reacted and grabbed her.
"Rachel, it's alright," I held her tight. She sobbed herself awake.
"It was just a nightmare," I soothed her rubbing her back. "Just a nightmare."
I felt her shake her head.
"It was a memory." Her breathing eased, "I'm OK. I'm OK now." She hissed as she pulled back. "I think I will take your advice, Mr Bear. I'll see a doctor as soon as I can. Maybe they can help with my shoulders." She pushed away from me weakly. I could see wetness booming in her dress, around the site of the injury.
"I think you've torn them open." I told her, moving to sit in the chair again.
"It feels worse now than when it happened." She admitted.
I barely restrained myself from lifting a hand to push her hair away.
"There's a woman coming today with a truck. She can take you in." I told Rachel. She startled at me, and thought, then she nodded.
"It's best that I'm not seen to be alone with you." She looked sad as she said this. I nodded. I opened my mouth to speak, but couldn't think what to say.A knock at the door startled both of us. I swung my head around. Horse waved his phone at me.
"Daisy just called, she's coming down with a female doctor to check out Miss Henderson. Just thought I'd let you all know."
"Thanks, Horse." I turned back to Rachel. "Well that's sorted. Now you get back to resting. And think good thoughts. No more nightmares." I told her, pulling her blankets up again. She nodded.
"I'll let you know when they arrive." I smoothed the blanket and turned to walk out the door, just in time to catch Horse's smirk.I frowned at him. He just indicated with his head to go outside. We walked a bit, and then Horse spoke.
"So I'll tell Maz the wedding's off?"
"What?! What wedding?" I replied.
"Yours and hers." He guffawed, "She's had the hots for you from day one, my friend."
"What?!" I was astounded. Messenger Maz, the girl with all gossip in town, where no secret was safe, was interested in me? Her boss.
"Yep that's why she wears all those sexy outfits to work,"
"What outfits?" I was confused. His sister was just a co worker, wasn't she?
"Oh man, this is gold. You never noticed what she wears?" He was almost rolling on the floor.
"Why would I?"
"Bear, my sister had been chasing you since we met. For years, four fucking years I've had to put up with talk about you, her digging for information about you. Man the torture I've been put through." He put his hands up, "I don't say anything, not since that first time you flipped out and we got you into treatment. I could be almost burnt alive now and not say a thing about you."
"She's been wasting her time." I kept walking.
"Obviously."
I stopped.
"If she's been interested in me, then why the fuck has she been opening her legs around town? She following Blazes method of 'waiting'?"I walked on, while Horse stood still. I was pissed now. How can someone find the person they want to with for the rest of their lives, and still fuck around.
Horse
I watched my best friend stomp away. Contrary to popular belief he did not fuck around. He took over the position of caretaker of the prospects in their nights out from Midwife when Daisy came back. But even before, he never let loose. And he always hated Blaze once he found out that Blaze was still married, and not just a single Dad. He also used to dislike Shaquille, until he realised that she didn't sleep around. Plus she cornered him one night and set him straight. She was in it for Dylan. But she'd never get custody unless Blaze gave it to her. So she played the long game for the kid. Then he had a grudging respect. Still avoided her when he could.
The side of Bear I saw in the kitchen was new. He was tender and sweet to the girl. Almost like Midwife was to Daisy. I smiled. My friend was hooked. And the girl didn't have to even try. Plus I got to dash my sisters dreams. I've grinned and followed my brother in all but name, and I was glad about that.
